Terror threats multiplying like rabbits- Chair of Homeland Security Committee

OK, Mike McCaul didn't invoke that particular cliche, but he did manage to reference spiderwebs and wildfires.

Apparently the War on Terror is succeeding beyond anyone's wildest dreams. At least in the wildest dreams of all those War on Terror profiteers who have been making hay while the (terror) sun shines. Having terror threats increase while you're pocketing billions in profits allegedly fighting terror threats has got to be good news, at least as long as Joe Taxpayer buys into the bullshit.

Looks like the War on Terror is following the War on Drugs down the road of institutionalized idiocy. After fighting the War on Terror for over a decade we see terror threats multiplying. After fighting the War on Drugs for over four decades, drugs are cheaper, more potent, and more available than ever.

Hey, what's not to like?

Wall Street Journal plots course for Ukraine's future

Here's the first two paragraphs verbatim of today's WSJ plea for the triumph of neoliberalism in Ukraine.

For the second consecutive Sunday, more than half a million people filled the streets of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The anti-government demonstrations are an important moment for the future of Europe, though you wouldn't know it from America's indifference.

Ukraine straddles a faultline between autocratic Russia and free Europe. The country of 46 million is divided between Russian-speakers in the east and nationalists in the west, but most Ukrainians want their country to get closer to Europe. The protests show that Ukrainians are fed up with their rapacious political system and aspire to live under the rule of law.

Yes, Ukrainians are clamouring for the rule of law and only an indifferent America, led by that Kenyan communist Obama, is barring the door.

While the choice may well be between autocratic Russia and free Europe, one could just as well make the choice between solvent Russia and bankrupt Europe.

The cadres of youthful freedom lovers would do well to inquire of their Greek counterparts how the EU dream is working out for them.

The misguided protesters in Kiev do not see it that way of course. They imagine that they will displace the Germans at the top of the heap.

They have displaced the Germans before. Nowhere did the Nazi juggernaut find more willing recruits for its Einsatz Gruppen than in Ukraine.

But that was then. Just because this is now doesn't mean the masses of Ukrainian youth have learned anything from their history.

Let them keep ripping down statues.

They obviously take their religion seriously in Vancouver. Or maybe their atheism. It's the same coin they're tossing in the air, isn't it?

But those 2000 comments (closer to 2500 now) prove my point about comments becoming an independent genre in the past couple of years.

Frankly, I think the good folks at the Centre for Inquiry cooked this up as a publicity stunt. Everybody, but EVERYBODY, gets that Jim Pattison is an old-school go-to-meetin' evangelical Christian. It stands to reason that there might be some bumps in the road when you want to display your anti-God message on this God-fearing man's billboards.

So this is a real coup for the Centre for Inquiry. Got ten times the attention that a few billboards would have, and didn't have to pay a penny for it!

I suspect that at some level Mr. Pattison respects your PR savvy.

Turkey struggles with terror tourists

"We strongly condemn every kind of terrorist act," Turkish PM Erdogan claimed at an OECD gathering in Istanbul last September.

And here is Erdogan again in November, "It is out of the question that groups like al-Nusra and al-Qaeda can take shelter in our country."

Either Erdogan is unaware of what goes on in his country, or he is lying.

Here's a senior Turkish bureaucrat putting a sightly different spin on the matter;

It's not correct to say that no members of these radical groups have crossed through Turkey. But 35 million tourists are coming through Turkey. It's not possible to monitor all of them.

Aha! While Turkey has a zero tolerance policy against supporting jihadists, nothing can be done to deter those who hide among 35 million tourists.

Here's a BBC report that offers some insights into the terror tourism industry. If you're a young Islamic man with a sense of adventure and a calling to kill infidels, you find your way to Turkey from wherever you happen to be in the world.

From the airport you find your way to one of many B&B's near the Syrian border. Stay a couple days, see the sights, then slip over the border for a tour of death and destruction with al-Nusra. Play jihad for a few weeks or months, kill a few infidels in the name of Allah, and off you go, back to that B&B, back to the airport, and back to France or the UK or Minnesota.

Now that's a vacation with a kick! No wonder attendance at Disneyland is down!

Rick Santorum, freedom fighter

The think tank here at The View From Falling Downs commented often on the musings of Rick Santorum back in the 2012 election race. Santorum was one of the fun candidates, as in you could have a lot of fun riffing off his moronic statements. Only the Newtster outdid him in the imbecilic commentary department.

God I miss those guys!

We even had Santorum doing battle with the devil at the Daytona 500. That was some classic blogger excitement, let me tell you... and I still get a kick out of it.

Well, here's some good news for those of us who miss Rick.
