As US throws Israel under the bus, Netanyahu grateful for Canadian support

You have to love the rhetoric. Romney dropped the "under the bus" reference into his convention speech right between motherhood and apple pie.

But those crafty Canadians... they know to suck up when the sucking's good. Long angling to be universally recognized as Israel's very best friends in the whole world, the Harper gang seized the moment last Friday and announced the closure of Canada's embassy in Tehran.

Netanyahu lost no time in commending the Harper-Baird-MacKay triumvirate on their courage and leadership, which must have made the three stooges feel at least a foot taller.

Each.

Prime Minister Harper. The born-again Christian who sees Biblical prophecy playing itself out in the Holy Land.

Foreign Minister John Baird, who goes globe-trotting with his "personal rabbi" in tow.

And Defense Minister MacKay, who is married to the daughter of an Iranian expatriate.

What they don't seem to appreciate is that the vast majority of Israelis are deathly afraid that Netanyahu will unleash something that saner heads would rather not see unleashed. Netanyahu is a man determined to cement his place in the history books for the next thousand years.

That's not the sort of megalomaniac who needs encouragement.

So in the event that the cooler heads do not prevail, there is a good chance that Obama will let the Israelis go  it alone.

With the help of the Canadians of course.

Let me see... we could have the Princess Pollyanna regiment on the ground by, say, 2014. At least if we can lease some transport planes from Kazakhstan

And we do have some submarines. I think.

In drydock.

So don't worry Bibi.

We've got your back!

Hezbollah weighs in on the Israeli casualty debate

We've had occassion here to comment on the foolishness emanating from the upper reaches of Likud about how in the event of an Iran war, "only" a few hundred Israelis will be lost.

The buffoons making these claims are also the ones who love to repeat ad nauseum that there are, at any given moment, 200 or 500 or 700 thousand, depending on the speaker and the speech, hostile missiles pointed at the Holy Land.

Well, here comes Mr. General Secretary of Hezbollah, putting a number on that foolishness. Hassan Nasrallah yesterday opined that in his view tens of thousands of Israelis would perish in the event of another war with Lebanon.

And he's just talking about Lebanon. Iran has many more much larger missiles.

Nasrallah is of course fully aware that any war with Israel is going to take the lives of tens of thousands of his people too. Which is why he isn't about to start one.

But his numbers do make a sort of sense. How these idiots in the Knesset can on Monday claim hundreds of thousand of missiles are pointed at Israel, and on Wednesday assure the populace that only a few hundred citizens will be lost in the event of the war they are itching to start, beggars belief.

American news networks prep for Israel's attack on Iran

I'm not making this up. According to one of the big dogs at Counterpunch the major news networks are prepping their graphics and their on-air "personalities" for the coming war.

If that's true, my guess is that they'll be emptying their Tel Aviv offices at the same time.

In the event that there is an Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear program, look for massive Iranian retaliation. This won't be home-made rockets flying out of Gaza and landing harmlessly in the desert. This will be the real deal.

There will be no safe place in Israel.
