I see where the CBC has a story on how health care in Haiti is gonna go straight down the shitter without more help from Canada.
This story is an example of a genre of reporting that was very popular in the 60's and 70's. Us First World folks had lots and lots of solutions to the problems of those Third World folks.
Don't worry, Dark People! Big Ag will solve your problems with agricultural productivity. Big Pharma will deliver a knock-out blow to those tropical diseases that lay waste to your working population.
Let us open up a few "free-trade" zones so your unemployed masses can experience the zen of industrial discipline by undercutting the $35/month textile workers in Bangladesh!
And God forbid that you Dark People rock the boat of First World munificence by electing some wild-eyed radical like Jean-Bertrand Aristide as your leader.
After everything we've done for you, how dare you do that to us?
Yes, Canada has helped health care in Haiti. Canada has also helped destroy democracy in Haiti.
On balance, maybe Haiti would be better off without our help.

Sean Penn hobnobs with America-haters at Chavez funeral
That's more or less the spin you're going to find when you google "Sean Penn Chavez funeral."
Yup, just another Hollywood liberal sucking up to the world-wide conspiracy to tear down America.
The only problem with that theory is that it's wrong on every level. Hugo Chavez was a great fan of American culture and American people and American baseball.
What he could not abide was American foreign policy.
The Beltway twats in charge of that foreign policy would do well to peruse the list of heads of state attending that funeral.
How many of those countries get American "aid" in one form or another?
Your "aid" has obviously not deterred them from honoring a man whom the American government has gone out of its way to portray as an anti-democratic, anti-American despot.
Which brings me back to Sean Penn.
The think tank here at Falling Downs has commended Penn for his efforts to assist Haiti. We have also said he is much too cosy with current Haiti boss Michel Martelly.
Martelly was at the Chavez funeral too. What this suggests is that within the so-called non-aligned states attendance was seen as something of a halo-polishing strategy. Martelly was Haiti's popular choice for President only because the real popular choice is banished from the land, not by Haitians, but by the US.
Aristide has far more in common with Chavez than Martelly ever will.

Haiti: NGO capital of the world
Haiti is fast approaching the third anniversary of the devastating earthquake that unleashed a tsunami of rebuilding donations from around the world.
That anniversary will no doubt see a torrent of "what's wrong with Haiti" articles in the global media. Billions in reconstruction aid, and how is the rebuilding going?
Frankly, it isn't going anywhere, and here's an insight into why. We're quoting American Red Cross spokesperson Sandrine Capelle Manuel from an article in the NYT;
We prioritized all the issues and created a consultative group that is representative of the community fabric... and now we need to do a master plan...
Huh?
Three years after the earthquake one of the grand-daddies of all NGOs has spent millions consulting, and is ready to go to the planning stage?
How is such a thing even possible?
They prioritized the issues? A million people lost their homes and a few million more are at risk of food and water shortages. There you go; prioritized in ten seconds. Does it not occur to these people that after three years they should have done something other than consulting and planning?
The same article also quotes a Haitian, Pierre Justinville;
I think we Haitians need to take the wheel.
The think tank here at Falling Downs believes Pierre is right. Send the thousands of NGOs packing. Give every Haitian a shovel and a wheelbarrow. Close the airport so the wealthy expats who live in Miami and Montreal and Switzerland can't come back and interfere.
By the time the next three years roll by, Haitians will have built a thriving self-sufficient country.
And they'll be well on their way to breaking their dependency on the neo-colonialism of the NGOs.
