There seems to be lots of folks in the United States of Amnesia who believe "fake news" was discovered mere months ago by the mainstream stalwarts at WaPo and NYT.
That would be fake news. Carl Bernstein (among others) was writing about the manufacture of fake news by the CIA, in collusion with mainstream outlets like WaPo and NYT, forty years ago.
How odd that the two most influential purveyors of fake news post WWII would "discover" it at this late date!
And all thanks to those hacked emails that lifted the veil on Dem Party hanky-panky in their slimy sandbagging of the Sanders' campaign.
Putin was behind it, of course!
That's a fake fact regurgitated endlessly by the pointy-headed pundits at both of those esteemed outlets, without ever a whiff of proof being provided. From there it ripples out endlessly to "legitimate" news sites around the world. Nobody needs to provide proof because the Times and the Post already gave these fake facts their seal of approval.
That's why it's more than a little scary to read that Zuckerberg and his billionaire Silicon Valley cronies are all in for saving journalism. Facebook and Google are already busying themselves in their self-appointed role as censors of the internet and guardians of truth, and Amazon boss Bezos, who does hundreds of millions in business with the CIA, already owns the Washington Post.
They are truly doing God's work, because even W, steadfast truth-teller that he wasn't during his eight year reign of terror (at least from the perspective of millions of common citizens in Afghanistan and Iraq) has come out as a champion of truth in media.
A free press is the very cornerstone of our democracy, dontcha know!
Yes, it's time to push back against the fake news tsunami, and who better than Zuckerberg and Bezos to lead the charge!
What could go wrong?

The car of the future won't need a driver
No doubt you've heard about the Google experiments with driverless cars. And it ain't just the geeks at Google. Audi, Mercedes, Freightliner, and pretty much every other big name in over-the-road transportation is figuring out how to make cars and trucks that won't be driver-dependant.
That's gonna be a massive bummer for those of us who actually enjoy the task of piloting a motorized vehicle. Alas, those days are coming to an end.
The geeks are winning.
And not only are the geeks winning, they seem to be tied in pretty tight with the Big Dogs in what we might loosely term the "military-industrial-prison-education-agri-chem-NGO" complex.
After all, where would Bill Gates be without those guys?
Or, Zuckerberg, for that matter.
If you're old enough to recall the pre-digital era, you'll remember that files got filed, stuff got done, everybody had a job, and nobody got hacked.
After thirty years of Microsoft/Apple progress, all files get corrupted sooner or later, much less ever gets done in spite of ten times the investment, hardly anyone has a job, and everything gets hacked.
And we are led to believe that this is the result of something called "progress."
But make no mistake; progress continues its progress...
In a few short years you'll get into that driverless Uber-ride that slides up to your apartment within minutes of you having pushed the "need ride" button on your smart-phone.
You can be half or three quarters or even 100% in the bag, and you'll still get to your destination, because in the post-driver era impaired driving will be an impossibility!
It'll be like the old days, when Festus wobbled outta the saloon three sheets to the wind, tumbled into the back of the hay-wagon, and had the horses walk him home while he was passed out in the hay.
Yup, we're progressing so fast, we're almost back to that...
Except tomorrow, when you pass out in the back of that driverless Googlemobile, Uber will have scanned the data-base for outstanding outrages in your digital history.
That's when you'll find out that you can't get out of that handy-dandy driverless car till you've taken care of your outstanding library overdue fines and whatever else might be outstanding on your digital record:

Facebook CEO Zuckerberg's net worth rockets by 15 billions thanks to selling your secrets to the NSA
That's a damned good business model Zucky's got going on.
Create Facebook addicts who are more than happy to spill their innermost secrets all over the world wide web.
Then sell them out to the NSA.
"Sell" being the operative word here.
Then again, if people are stupid enough to embrace this "new" model of state surveillance, ie let the private sector do the dirty work and then we'll pay them for it, they kinda get what they deserve.

Facebook: here today, gone tomorrow
Ya, I have to admit I envy Mark Zuckerberg.
From Harvard wanker to CEO of one of the most valuable corporations on the planet in under ten years?
Darn right I envy Mark Zuckerberg.
He has tasted success beyond my wildest dreams. Beyond his too, I'm sure.
And sooner or later he's gonna taste the downside of success.
It's called failure.
Facebook is an aberration. During the last high-tech bubble there were on-line pet stores valued in the billions of dollars. How does an on-line meeting place have a brighter future than an on-line pet shop?
Well, it does and it doesn't.
It does because for the time being people still use Facebook.
It doesn't because people will switch to the next new thing as quick as they went to Facebook.
Then Facebook will be just another on-line pet shop.
Go short, my friends.
