No matter what your opinion of Mike Duffy, you had to feel for the guy when you watched the Harper gang hang him out to twist in the wind.
Today a judge in Ottawa completely tossed the case that's hung over Duffy's head for three years. Frankly, I hope Duffy launches legal action against the Conservative Party and Stephen Harper personally for the politically motivated ordeal that was foisted on him by a PMO that had not the slightest compunction about tossing the most loyal of loyalists over the side to make a few embarrassing headlines go away.
Congratulations, Mr. Duffy!

Bwana knows best
My Globe and Mail has this patronizing twaddle on view for my edification today.
The First Nations Financial Transparency Act was a typical bit of Harperite mischief-making. Slyly exploiting stereotypes dear to Harper's base, it promised to bring transparency to the no-doubt dubious financial dealings of native leaders.
According to the Globe, "anomalies started turning up... arrangements that in many cases had never before been made public and were surprising and puzzling to the members of those communities themselves. Those revelations proved the FNFTA's worth."
Yes, out of almost 600 bands that have reported, a small handful of anomalies did show up. But overall, I'd say that our native brothers and sisters have a track record far better than Harper's senate appointments.
And how's this for egregious self-righteousness; "The governed always need to know what the governors are up to."
Indeed!
Whoever wrote that must not be following the Mike Duffy shit show that's been unfolding in Ottawa. The crew that foisted "transparency" on Canada's native communities obviously doesn't believe in it for themselves... maybe that's because unlike Indians, those white chiefs in Ottawa can be trusted.
Or not.

Did the Prime Minister's wife really leave him for a woman?
It's that time of the year when the pot-addled hillbilly likes to drop in on friends, relatives, distant relatives, friends of friends, and random acquaintances old and more recent who have the good fortune of owning waterfront vacation property. I've got this summer strategy down to such a fine art that it wouldn't make any sense for me to get my own place on the water.
So it was that I found myself the other day drinking in a 4.9 million dollar view over in Muskoka. Also found myself chewing the fat with a couple of guys who have some proximity to certain Harper gang insiders.
We were musing about what might or might not yet come out in the course of that theatre of the absurd commonly known as "the Duffy trial." That's turning into quite the sordid spectacle, is it not? All those God-fearing Alliance Church types twisting the Word Of God inside out to justify the fact that their least favorable option when caught fibbing is to fess up and just tell the truth. I mean, look at poor Nigel - he reached into his own pocket and pulled out 90 big ones just to avoid the truth coming out.
Here's a scripture for you, Nigel; "be sure your sin will find you out."
We got to speculating about what else Harper's Holy Rollers might have swept under the carpet in this dark decade, and talk eventually came round to the Laureen Harper scandal. That might sound like an oxymoron to the Big Steve fan club, but google "Laureen Harper affair" or "Laureen Harper lesbian affair" and you'll be shocked at the slimy innuendo that bubbles up.
When that story was first getting traction a few years ago, it didn't last long. The general public may have assumed that was because it lacked substance. But when you look at the lengths that these God-fearing men will go to bury the truth, you have to wonder.
Then the conversation turned to my favorite Harperite, bullshittin' Baird. Regular readers will know that the think tank here at Falling Downs has theorized that the reason for Baird's sudden disappearance from the Harper cabinet was nothing more significant than his decision to cash in on twenty-five years of public service.
But apparently there's another angle. For many years Big John was something of an anomaly among the Bible-thumping Harperites; an unclosetted if not quite openly gay man amongst a gang of homophobes, it was obviously Big John who was putting the fun into fundamentalism.
Too much fun, it seems. The Alliance Church Mafia was alright with his egregious incompetence and his boorish hooliganism on the world stage, but they were never comfortable with his lifestyle choices, and the word is he sealed his fate when he and his posse of party boys rocked Macdonald House in London for free during the Christmas holiday of 2012. That was a bridge too far, and from that point on even the most loyal of Harper loyalists began to secretly lobby for Baird's demise.
As with Laureen, we were always prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt; after all, if the various scandals had any substance to them, they wouldn't disappear so quickly, would they? What the Duffy trial is showing the public is how hard the Harper gang works to make unpleasant facts go away. It's been quite the eye-opener for a lot of once-loyal Harper fans.
To paraphrase Heiner Muller; the deepest plunge into Hell is from the heights of self-righteousness.

Not a good week for the Harper gang
First off, we've got the Duffy trial. That's a work in progress, now progressing into its third or fourth week of he-said she-said ennui that seems to cast far more doubt on the good offices of Harper and Co. than it does on Puffy Duffy.
Anybody who followed the Duffster's career back when he had one knew this was a journo destined for bigger and better things. This was a guy with an uncanny knack for sucking up to those in power... or failing that, those who would be in power next.
Sure enough, the Harper gang took the reins in Ottawa and Big Steve gave Puffy Duffy the reward of a lifetime - a seat in the Senate!
By this time the Puffster had nation-wide recognition. Everybody knew Puffy. That's why he was put in the Senate. He was put in the Senate to butter the bread on the government side. Which, according to all the evidence, he did and did well.
He was one of the busiest of the busy senators pushing the party line for Big Steve and the Conservative Party.
Then some of the jealous journos who coveted Puffy's seat in the Senate started asking some embarrassing
questions about how the Senator from PEI actually lived in Ottawa.
That's the kind of hanky-panky that's gone on since the first Senate meeting, but heretofore it was considered uncouth to bring it up.
No more.
At first the Harper gang circled the wagons and hoped the questions would go away.
When they didn't, they tossed the Puffster overboard.
To the astonishment of the Conservative Party elite, he floated.
So here we are, having a trial that will cost tens of millions, to get to the bottom of a "corruption" case that might have involved a couple of hundred thousand.
It's not a trial going well for the Harper gang.
Then we've got the Omar Khadr case. Omar Khadr was set free on bail today by a judge who obviously did not see herself constrained by the diktats of the Harper gang. Omar was a fifteen year old kid who allegedly tossed the grenade that killed a US soldier in Afghanistan in 2002.
According to the Harper gang, that was a heinous war crime.
Ya.
In the first place, I suppose if you killed a US soldier in the US, there might be a case.
But killing a US soldier who is a part of a foreign army invading a foreign country... how is that a war crime?
What was particularly odious about the Khadr case is that it unravelled in the shadow of Canada's enthusiastic endorsement of the UN protocol on the rights of child soldiers.
Today a Canadian court granted bail to Omar Khadr, who has been illegally detained since he was fifteen years old, first at Gitmo and then in Canada. At every turn the Harper gang has blocked every move to grant this child soldier the rights that Canada enthusiastically endorsed back in 2000.
Finally, this week brought us the huge NDP win in Harper's home province. Harper and his ilk are the children of an Alberta conceit which posits that Alberta's oil wealth is the result of hard-working Albertans putting that oil in the ground through their own hard work.
That's an attitude that has protected the PC leadership in Alberta for 44 years, and it might have continued had the gravy train of $100/bbl oil rolled on just a bit longer.
But it didn't.
Instead, we've got $50 oil and a huge hole in the provincial budget.
That made folks take a closer look at how their province has been managed the last 44 years.
The PC's in Alberta started up their sovereign wealth fund forty years ago. They've stashed away a whopping 17 billions to look after the people of Alberta after the oil runs out.
Meanwhile, the government of Norway started up a sovereign wealth fund 25 years ago. They've managed to stash away a trillion dollars.
When Albertans look at that, they can't help but realize they've been grossly mismanaged.
By their Conservative government.
All of which adds up to a certain level of discomfort among the Harperites in Ottawa, who will be facing an election in five months.

Arbour, Duffy, Harper, that Ukrainian piano player, and the reset of Canadian foreign policy
Louise Arbour has gone rogue. Once the darling of the "robust interventionist" crowd, ie R2P, she's definitely been dialling it down recently, to the point where she's gone on record as saying R2P has been a disaster.
The Duffster's trial for financial hanky-panky got underway yesterday. Good old Puffy Duffy was a mainstay of mainstream news in Canada all the back to the 1970's. After decades of sucking up to power he finally realized his dream five or six years ago with an appointment to the Senate.
Alas, when a few media types latched onto his expense claims, Big Steve was quick to throw him overboard. Bear in mind that this was well before those same media types had the crack-smokin' mayor of Toronto to kick around.
Puffy Duffy's padded expense accounts must have seemed like a big score at the time.
We're living a new reality today. Ford be gone but Duffy just getting started. Revenge of the fat fucks.
It's gonna get ugly!
Meanwhile, Big Steve be fightin' evil-doers over there in Syria. Technically speaking, bombing a sovereign state other than your own is viewed as a "war crime." Today the Canadian Air Force of Virtue bombed Syria for the first time, because....
Because?
Because Big Steve saw a few votes in being tough on terror?
Who knows?
While all that is going on, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra has metaphorically beshat its own nest by wading into political debates that should be totally beyond its purview. Seems the esteemed Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa is persona non grata at Roy Thompson Hall because she's one of those Uke ingrates who
fails to appreciate the manifold blessings of the Nuland-Pyatt putsch that removed a democratically elected government in her country last year.
The official Canadian response to that particular overthrow of a democratically elected government has been an embarrassment to anyone who still puts the slightest stock in the hyperbole of democracy, free speech, etc.
Nobody cheered this anti-democratic over-throw of a democratically elected government louder than the closet fascists at the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Because the Ukrainian Canadian vote could be a king-maker in the up-coming election, the Harper Gang has been pandering to those folks in the most unseemly manner for years now.
That's why a piano player made the front page this week.
That's where Canada is at today. We celebrate the overthrow of democratic governments. We blacklist artists who protest. We commit war crimes against states that have never raised their hands against us.
There's an election coming up. Maybe we should start paying attention.
Maybe we should make plans to vote.
It's not too late yet.

Will Puffy Duffy take down Big Steve?
The news that the RCMP have charged Canadian Senator Mike Duffy with 31 counts of fiscal hanky-panky has raised eyebrows across the land.
Are the RCMP out to get Duffy, or are they after Big Steve?
After all, these 31 counts should be before the courts and all over the front pages during the run-up to the 2015 federal election.
Teflon Steve might have a few awkward moments if he is called as a witness, as he inevitably will be. After all, he's the guy who made the Puffster a Senator, and he's the guy who so ruthlessly cut him loose when the so-called "expense scandal" hit the fan.
Which I thought was rude, because by all accounts Duffy was a loyal foot-soldier in the Harper legion, and a damned effective fund-raiser.
As for the expense scandal itself, that seems to be a case of changing times. What Senators have traditionally got away with they can't anymore.
Yesterday's norms are today's no-no's.
What everybody is looking forward to is the court grappling with the question of how that $90,000 cheque from Nigel Wright was not a bribe when Nigel handed it to Mike, but became one when Mike trousered it.
How does that work?
Maybe it's because Nigel is a Big Money guy, an insider at Onex, whereas Duffy is, underneath it all, a regular schmuck who made good.
It's gonna be a good show!

The selective myopia of the "queer friendly" press
Why is it that any news story about Ontario Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne is more likely than not to mention that she is Canada's first "openly gay" premier?
Could it be that the media, almost entirely an organ of the neo-liberal right, seeks to mine the residual homophobia that might swing a few votes here and there?
The fact is that everybody already knows that Kathleen Wynne is gay and we don't need to be reminded of it every time we read a news story about Ms. Wynne, because NOBODY CARES!
On the other hand, the same media outlets never ever mention that John Baird is Canada's first openly gay Foreign Minister.
Baird gets a free pass because he is a stalwart of the most neo-liberal far-right government that Canada has ever had in the modern era.
And aside from an occasional crusade against a marginal player like Mike Duffy, that's not a boat the neo-liberal press is interested in rocking.

Canada's top spy unmasked as fraud artist
Here's a story that is getting virtually no traction in the Canadian media.
Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto, seen maybe smoking crack with black youths on a video that may or may not exist?
Tons of traction!
Some fat fuck in the Senate playing fast and loose with the spending guidelines?
Tons of traction!
But the top civilian overseer of Canada's spy agency, personally appointed to the position by Big Steve, fingered for major fraud... right next to nothing!
Arthur Porter was Harper's hand-picked top dog at CSIS. Privy to every national secret, and every NATO secret.
If the allegations are true, Mr. Porter connived with the good folks at Canada's premier engineering firm SNC Lavalin to defraud the Canadian taxpayer of tens of millions of dollars.
Said connivance took place under the watchful eye of SNC Lavalin Chair, anti-corruption crusader and occasional Globe and Mail columnist Gwyn Morgan.
That would seem to be a far bigger story than "Toronto Mayor smokes crack" or "Mike Duffy fudges expense account."
So where is the story?

Stars align to proclaim the ANTICHRIST
Yup, they have indeed.
The North Star is right there in Uranus... and the Antichrist is...
Puffy Duffy!
The Canadian media are doing their best to spin the Nigel Wright personal cheque for $90,000 as a "loan" to a hard-done-by senator.
That's how the Illuminati would like us to spin it.
Truth is, Puffy Duffy makes $5,000 per speaking engagement. That isn't exactly Al Gore territory, but it ain't small potatoes either.
That's on top of his Senate stipend and the accumulated savings from his stint as a top-drawer journalist.
Obviously Duffy could cough up 90 large if you turned him upside down and gave him a good shake.
In truth, that $90k from Nigel Wright was not a "loan."
It was a tribute.
The reason Nigel has multiple bundles of $90k in his socks drawer is that he was a made member of the hedge-fund mafia.
Which reveals the truth about Duffy. Godfather of the hedgies...
