The theater of American justice

Oh look, no sooner is Trayvon off the front page (everywhere except CNN) than we've got a new scapegoat!

Yup, 83 year old Whitey Bulger has caused the demise of one of the folks about to testify for the prosecution.

I'm sure Whitey was a nasty enough piece of work in his day, but for Christ's sake, the man is 83 years old and he commands absolutely nothing. Is it time to give it a rest?

This is right next to those farcical trials where some senile 98 year old Ukrainian guy finally gets caught for having been a teenage guard at a Nazi death camp when he was 16 years old.

I'm not defending Bulger and I'm certainly not defending Nazis, but when you look at the particulars, is it not possible that cash-strapped America should be considering other priorities?

When these alleged perpetrators are in their 80's and 90's, is there any serious person who believes there is anything to be gained by employing the full weight of the state against them?

These prosecutions run into the millions of dollars.

These 80 and 90 year-olds are extremely unlikely to re-offend.

Let's leave them alone and get on with more realistic priorities.

Piers Morgan determined to ride Zimmerman gravy train to the last ratings point

Don't get me wrong; I like Piers.

He's a great improvement on Larry Suspenders for that time slot.

Frankly, I don't know how Piers has managed to avoid the phone-hacking fall-out back in his homeland, where he was a really big deal.

Maybe his CNN gig makes him to big to fail?

But he is certainly doing his part to make CNN the 24/7 all Zimmerman all the time channel.

Last night he had Larry Elder on, and while I'm not particularly an Elder fan, I'd have to say that Larry made more sense than Piers.

But he's back at the ratings trough tonight. The suits at CNN obviously think there is more to be mined in this non-story.

Piers joins Kielburger kult

Piers had one of the Kielburger kids on his show tonight.

There's three of four of them out there. They're famous for having discovered child poverty in the lesser-developed world. They were so moved on discovering poverty in the lesser-developed world that they and their media-savvy parents started a NGO to set things right.

Hence "Free the Children."

Not to be confused with a NGO of long standing, "Save the Children," which apparently spotted child poverty in the lesser-developed world but didn't do nearly enough, at least by Kielburger standards, to fix things.

So before you can say "this sounds like bullshit," those young Kielburgers have got their non-profit doing fund-raising via school programs all over North America. And they've got their for-profit "Me-to-We" subsidiary right in there alongside their non-profit, and schools everywhere are busy raising funds for these selfless Kielburgers who are building schools all over the world... and buying up real estate all over Toronto.

Piers was hugely impressed.

Which, by the way, might be one of the last times you see him being hugely impressed. The noose is tightening on what's left of his former team over in his old country... the phone hacking and all that stuff that was going on under Piers' watch when he was the Big Dog at News of the World...

Piers Morgan's one-note band

By now we pretty much get where Piers is at when it comes to gun control. As far as I'm concerned he's been useful in bringing some important issues to the fore.

And it seems sensible enough to me that a society might want to keep its criminally insane away from gun ownership. The mentally ill too.

But, as Ted Nugent pointed out tonight, no matter how many laws you pass, you're never going to 100% eliminate the possibility that a crazy person will get their hands on a gun.

So if I was Piers' manager, I think I'd be suggesting that he move things along a little bit and get himself over this gun control crusade.

Piers Morgan gets pants'd by Ben Shapiro

It's not that often that I see eye to eye with Ben Shapiro, but he definitely got the better of Piers Morgan tonight.

Morgan is still full tilt into his anti-gun campaign. He's at risk of pegging himself as a one-issue talking head. The one issue he's made his own since Sandy Hook is gun control.

In the first place, there is something mightily presumptuous about a recent immigrant taking on the second amendment. And while I believe America needs to have that debate, I question whether an Englishman who just washed up on America's shores is the right man to lead it.

Shapiro had the perfect rejoinder to that ubiquitous "why do you need an assault rifle to go hunting" argument.

It's not about hunting. It's about the day your government turns on you, Shapiro replied.

Shapiro has some family history in Germany back in the 30's when the government did exactly that.

And that is by no means an isolated incident.

Which is not to say that every Tom, Dick, and Scary should have the "right" to pick up an AR-15 and 6,000 rounds of ammo at the local Wal-mart.

I definitely got the sense that Ben agrees that the mentally unstable should be kept away from guns in general and military grade hardware in particular.

I just wish he'd raise his voice for the 101 ancillary issues that becloud gun control; poverty, crime, racism, alienation, desperation, poverty, the destruction of the working class in America, crime, poverty, the hatred engendered by the destruction of hope in America, poverty, crime....

Prince Harry bags a wog

You'll have to go to The Telegraph to read about it; I just couldn't resist that headline!

Must say those are some fetching photos of the Prince. Almost makes you want to join the RAF, doesn't it?

Makes you wonder why Piers Morgan would leave such a great country...

Why Ted Nugent should fire up a fattie

Don't get me wrong. I love Ted. He's one of the finest rock-and-roll guitarists who ever lived. As far as I'm concerned he's right up there with  Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

In fact, I think one reason he has never gotten his due as a musician is because he goes so far out of his way to push the envelope of political incorrectitude.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's an envelope I often try to push in my own way.

And I know that in his heart Ted is a sportsman when it comes to his hunting activities. Just today he was Tweeting from his deer-sit where's he's spending Christmas Eve with a crossbow.

That's a far cry from sitting in that deer-sit holding a Bushmaster with a 30 round clip.

I know Ted would correct me. That's not a clip; it's a "magazine."

So we know that Ted is, after all and above all, a true sportsman.

But when a toff like Piers Morgan gets him on TV Ted doesn't do himself any favors. What the hell is up with that "suck on my machine gun" stuff?

Ted, get a grip; that just makes you sound like a weirdo.

That's why you should fire one up now and then, Ted. It'll mellow you out a bit. In fact, if you want to head up this way I can hook you up with the coyote hunters around here. Nobody's got a 30 round clip, but they're providing an essential public service to the local farm economy.

And they bag dozens of coyotes every winter.

I can hook you up with some primo Puslinch red-hair too. It does a great job taking the edge off.

Hell, you won't even miss that 30 round clip.

Limey dolt interviews the three wise men just in time for Christmas

It's a holiday hug between Piers Morgan and Senators McCain, Lieberman, and Graham.

He's trying to lure them into shallow water, but so far it ain't working

He gave it a good try on the topic of gun control, to no avail.

Piers is pretty much letting them have their way with the entitlements debate as well.

Senator Graham has just let it be known that he will never again vote for an increase in the debt ceiling.

And then we get sidelined for the latest up-date from the latest mall shooting.

That's Christmas in America!

West Point now queer friendly

The storied chapel at West Point hosted its first same-sex marriage today.

That's bound to infuriate a lot of fundamentalists.

What are they going to do?

Move to Canada? Israel? England?.. hell no, those places are all way more queer friendly than the USA...

IRAN!!! That's it! They'll be happy in Iran, where, as Ahmadinejad recently reminded us on Piers Morgan, there are no homosexuals.

They'll be happy there.

The rest of us, gay or straight, Christian or Jewish or Muslim or none of the above, will sit tight and wait for the day when this kind of story isn't "news" anymore

Giuliani may be yesterday's man but still craves the limelight

There he was on CNN with that Brit who got Larry Kings time slot, railing against Obama.

Obama failed in Benghazi blah blah blah failed the people of New York City blah blah blah...

Oh give it a rest Rudy! Who gives a shit what you think?

Maybe that Brit, but you've got no constituency otherwise.

Rudy spends his days conning naive clients into retaining his lobby firm to wield its ever-diminishing influence on their behalf.

Meanwhile, current mayor Mike demonstrated how light he is on his feet (not to be confused with being "light in the loafers") by cancelling the New York Marathon this afternoon after assuring the world it was on right till he announced it wasn't.

That's a fellow who knows which way the wind is blowing.

Bloomberg and Republican governor of New Jersey Chris Christie (never accused of being light either in his loafers or on his feet, by the way...) both endorsed the black dude this week.

No wonder Rudy is shouting in his interview!
