On 28th October I wrote about Zimbabwe being the only country in Africa without a US military presence, but not to worry - the National Endowment for Democracy are busy beavers there, so it's only a matter of time.
Six days later, Martha O'Donovan, an American working for a NED funded project in Zimbabwe, gets arrested for offending President Mugabe. Coincidence?
In its 2016 Annual Report NED reveals that amongst the million and a half dollars it sprinkled around the country that year was a $45,000 stipend to the Magamba Network, O'Donovan's employer, "to promote freedom of expression and pro-democracy activism by youth through the use of satire, citizen journalism, and creative new media platforms..."
That is so Uncle Sam, is it not?
How is it that the US government has money for the youth of Africa to promote all that good stuff, but not for the youth of Flint or Baltimore?
Anyway, Martha, the old coot is 93 and won't be around much longer. When he finally kicks the bucket all those pro-democracy activists that the NED and Open Society Institutes have been training for years will spring into action.
It might get a little messy.
It might require a few special ops guys on the ground to protect America's enduring interests.
But change is coming to Zimbabwe!
Flint and Baltimore will have to wait.

Uncle Sam's adventures in Africa
The recent media kerfuffle over US troops in Niger didn't so much concern US troops in Niger as it did the Trump condolence call to one of the widows of the servicemen who died there. As such, the "story" wasn't about US troops in Africa, but about whether or not the POTUS is an a-hole, as if the answer to that question is somehow inconclusive and the matter requires further debate.
A host of your top-end US politicos have since come forward to claim that they had no idea there were US troops in Niger. According to some of the stuff I've been reading (admittedly on non MSM sites) the only country in Africa that does NOT have US boots on the ground is Zimbabwe. Not to worry; the National Endowment for Democracy (that US government "non-government organization" - and a shout-out to Orwell is in order here) have been busy beavers there, tilling the soil to prepare for the inevitable demise of the crotchety Bobby Mugabe.
According to General Thomas Waldhauser, AFRICOM boss, the US has an "enduring interest" in Niger and is there to fight terrorists and create stability.
Of course!
Just like they'll soon be fighting terror and bringing stability to the entire continent!
They've been bringing stability to Somalia for forty years now, with underwhelming results. One could argue that Somalia enjoys far less stability today than it had when America first started gifting them stability, but that's another place where the US has "enduring interests."
Just like they'll soon have enduring interests all across Africa!
And might these "interests" have anything to do with the best interests of Africans?
Not likely. After all, Uncle Sam's regime doesn't run the USA in the best interests of 350 million Americans; it's unlikely that they've got the best interests of 1.2 billion Africans in mind.
No, General Waldhauser is talking about the enduring interests of America's one percent, the clique of war-profiteers and their acolytes who are determined to rule the world.
While I didn't notice much in the way of congratulatory reportage, AFRICOM celebrated it's tenth anniversary this month.
They're just getting started...

Bullshittin' Baird takes break from Putin-bashing to bash African Union instead
Seems Canada's Foreign Minister has his shorts in a twist over the AU's leadership falling to anti-colonialist stalwart Bobby Mugabe.
According to Baird, the 90 year old Mugabe is a brutal dictator who "has long suppressed the freedoms and dignity of his people." The AU has thusly tarnished its credibility, blah, blah, blah, proving that Baird is the last person on earth to believe it has any.
Ironically, earlier in the week Baird represented Canada at the funeral of another 90 year old despot, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. He too may have long suppressed the freedoms and dignity of his people, but he also signed off on a $15 billions deal for armoured personnel carriers built in Canada.
Which to Baird's way of thinking made him a "good" brutal dictator!

After saving Africa from Africans, Hollande the Conqueror turns gaze on saving Middle East from Arabs
Hollande may be drowning in the polls, but he must be rising in the estimation of the esteemed BHL.
It was BHL after all, the man who saved Libya, who egged on the hapless Hollande in his pursuit of those mythical "spurs." And for Hollande, nothing else matters so long as he has the regard of the great BHL.
But those poll numbers are astonishingly dismal. Hollande has actually had the distinction of being named the worst politician in the world!
That can't possibly be fair... have those pollsters not heard of Stephen Harper? Or Bobby Mugabe?
Nevertheless, it is now estimated that if an election were held in the near future, both Le Pen and Sarkozy would make mincemeat of the hapless Hollande.
Be that as it may, the Conqueror has moved on from his rout of the evil-doers in Africa. Yes, there are still some loose ends to tie up, but by and large, African resources in the CAR and Mali have been made safe for democracy.
Thankfully, that has freed up the resources of the Republic to bring peace and freedom and democracy to Iraq yet again, as if they haven't had enough already.
No doubt Hollande is hoping for a bump in his polling numbers from this bold new venture.
Fat chance.
Does he not realize that there are more Arab immigrants in France than in any other of the Nations of Virtue?
He thinks bombing their homelands will make him more popular?
He really has been suckling at the BHL teat for much too long...
The only news event that has ever bumped Hollande's polling numbers was when he was caught out bumping that actress back in the spring.
Perhaps those invasions between the sheets are what Hollande does best. Forget the spurs, François, and for God's sake, stop listening to that imbecile BHL!

Robert Mugabe promises Zimbabwe free elections as birthday present
Not that the people are getting their hopes up. This is the 32nd year in a row that they've been promised the same present.
In that time Zimbabwe has seen her relative standing on every conceivable quality-of-life index plummet. Where Zimbabwe was once one of the most prosperous nations in Africa it is now one of the poorest in the world.
Infant mortality has doubled.
Life expectancy has dropped 20 years.
A quarter of the population has sought refuge outside its borders.
But the wise men of the West, with that R2P card in their holster and an itch to use it, decide to save the people of Libya, who before their liberation by NATO enjoyed the highest standard of living in Africa.
Could it be because Libya has oil and Zimbabwe doesn't?
