That's the title of the latest missive from the keyboard of Uri Avnery.
Avnery is a Jewish Israeli (as opposed to that 20% of the Israeli population who are not), now enjoying his tenth decade on God's good earth, who has been whinging about Palestinian rights almost from the day the modern state of Israel was invented.
Avnery was in fact a freedom fighter who helped shape the modern Jewish state. You know how it goes; one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist, and all that stuff...
I don't agree with Avnery on every position he takes, but I have the utmost respect for him. He foresaw issues fifty years ago that threaten to derail Israel's democracy today, if they haven't already.
He is once again right on the money in describing the rise of Trump as a new age of uncertainty for Israel.
Then again, when has Israel ever been about "certainty?"
The faux certainty of America's unquestioning support may be in question under Trump.
Good!
It's time that Israel stood on her own feet, that 20% non-Jewish population included, and carved out a future that is not in thrall to the whims of the latest US presidential candidate.

The single most important threat to Israel
Is not the Iranian bomb.
It's a Palestinian prisoner serving five life sentences in an Israeli jail for terror crimes.
It's the guy Uri Avneri labelled the "Mandela" of the Middle East.
Avneri wrote him up because of his call for non-violent resistance to the occupation. In mainstream Western news there really isn't any occupation. Maybe some disputed territory or something.
Avneri knows better, as does Marwan Barghouti.
Since his call for non-violent resistance last week Barghouti has been moved into solitary confinement.
Looks like his Israeli jailers are determined to make that Mandela comparison come true.

Why old guys matter; here's two with balls the size of watermellons
The Occupy generation has a lot to learn from the courage of these guys.
Uri Avneri just wrote an article hailing Marwan Bargouti as the Mandela of the Middle East. Uri is an Israeli Jew and Marwan is a Palestinian serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for terror crimes. What gives?
Avneri has been a fixture on the Israeli political scene since before Israel was a country. Nobody can doubt his bona fides as an Israeli patriot. At age 89 it's obvious that he doesn't feel the slightest compunction to toe anybody's party line. He's about peace, peace above all and after all, and he's not reluctant to gore the sacred cows of Israeli politics to make his point.
George Galloway is of a later generation, but still an old guy. He just smoked the Pakistani Labor candidate in a predominently Pakistani riding in a by-election for the Brit Parliament. Why would a plump middle-aged white guy be more attractive to ethnic voters than the candidate from their own ethic group? Because George tells it like it is and doesn't grovel before the political machine.
Hope lives!
