You've got to feel a pang of sympathy for guys like Petraeus and Allen.
They're over there as emissaries for a culture that is superior in every way.
That's why we insist on training their fighting forces even though they just whupped us in a war.
So the emissaries for the culture that is superior in every way get together with some towel-headed war-lord, and what do they find?
They find that Mr. Warlord has seven wives and a stable of dancing boys.
They're stuck with their high-school sweet-heart they married when they were nineteen.
Cultural superiority has a price.
And at some level, once our Generals see how the other half lives, that price begins to foment resentment.
Before you know it they're banging the secretary and the under-secretary and the other secretary under the desk. And of course the biographer.
They can't quite get their heads around the dancing boys, but you can bet they're working on it.
Then their career gets caught in the middle of a turf battle between the FBI and the CIA, and it's all over.
Meanwhile, Mr. Warlord who we vanquished years ago is up to nine wives, and he's just added a couple of fresh twelve year olds to his dancing-boy harem.
It sucks to be the winner.

Waziristan drone festival bags al-Qaeda top gun twice in a week
Seems like they got yet another high-ranking senior al-Qaeda number two leader the other day.
"This would be a serious blow to al-Qaeda, getting the number two leader twice in less than a week" said a US Army spokesman.
That must be one unique organizational structure those towelers have going. Nobody at the top, nobody at the bottom, and the other dozen or so guys are all either "no. 2" or "senior leaders".
This particular fantasy is on view at the Washington Post website at the moment. The al-Qaeda chimera is a terror network in constant flux, that's for sure. There seems to be no end to the "senior leaders" we're knocking off. I guess the rank and file are all those collateral damage civilians who might have raised a hand against us if they'd had the chance.
Every once in awhile when Obama or Biden is trying to make the case for leaving Afghanistan you'll hear them talk about how al-Qaeda is all but wiped out. In fact, I saw where Panetta was making exactly that case just today. But you watch, they'll bag a few more senior leaders before the month is out.
Of course everytime you kill anybody over there, senior leader or not, you've made an enemy for life. The brothers, the sons, the cousins, the in-laws, the rest of the village will all be biding their time till they can wreak vengeance.
So lets keep celebrating our success and wondering why they hate us.

US claims Taliban attacks are "clear sign of our progress"
Taliban fighters launched seven simultaneous attacks in the Afghan capital today.
The attacks come less than a month after Senators Lieberman, McCain and Graham penned an op-ed in the Washington Post called Sustaining Success in Afghanistan, an article that pushes wishful thinking into the realm of self-delusion by taking as its point of departure the premise that there is some "success" to sustain.
Today's Taliban attack is one of the most serious in Kabul since the Talibs were routed in 2001. If there is a momentum to be seen in Afghanistan, which side is it favoring? Facts on the ground would suggest that it is the Taliban who are sustaining success.
Nevertheless the usual spin barrage came from the usual sources today. Hillary condemned the attacks as "cowardly".
Ambassador Ryan Crocker actually managed to turn it into a good news story. Good news for us, at that! Somehow the fact that eleven years after their defeat the Taliban can launch attacks at will in the capital is a "clear sign of progress"!
Crocker must be thrilled that while our progress was manifesting itself in Kabul today, just over the border in Pakistan 400 Taliban and al-Qaeda militants were sprung from a Pakistani prison.
There'll be lots more signs of our progress in the weeks and months ahead!

Senator McCain spills the beans; Afghanistan has been a triumph!
That's got to come as a surprise to most folks who have been watching our "progress" over the past eleven years.
But there he was on Meet the Press this morning, assuring America that we've decimated the Taliban. Not only that, but the vast majority Of Afghans absolutely love their NATO/US liberators and would like us to stay indefinitely.
Which is what McCain is lobbying for. And he cites a number of historical precendents. Aren't American troops still in Korea and Japan and Germany? Haven't they been there indefinitely? Don't all those people love us?
So what's the rush pulling out of Afghanistan? Besides, even though the Taliban are decimated, as soon as we leave al Qaeda is gonna be all over the place.
What we should be rushing, according to McCain, is the liberation of Syria. That Assad chap is pretty much the most evil dictator in the whole world. For some obscure reason we should back up al Qaeda chief Zawahiri's call to free those poor Syrian folks from their government.
It was one of those McCain performances that leaves you scratching your head. Is he really privy to so much insider info that any of this nonsense might make sense?
Or is he just smoking way better stuff than us regular folks?
