White Privilege in action- Canada 2022

The other day, the local high school celebrated the arrival of the first refugee student from the Ukraine war. The front office even played the Ukrainian national anthem in their honour during the morning announcements!

Truly a warm welcome!

The Ukraine war began February 24th of this year.

Among the folks listening to the morning announcements were several who have been involved in efforts to bring Afghan refugees to Canada. The Afghan war ended, for Canada, in 2014. It ended for good six months before the Ukraine war started.

These folks have been struggling to bring Afghan refugees to Canada for years.

They're still working on it.

Afghan refugees are brown and Muslim.

Ukrainian refugees are white and Christian.

That's what "white privilege" looks like, especially when your Deputy PM, aka Fluffy's brain, is a Ukrainian nationalist.

Canada gives tip 'o the cap to white privilege

Not often I find myself on the same page as the wokelings at CBC News. Brodie Fenlon's got another excruciating essay on view today making excuses for the pathetic "journalism" he's responsible for. One of the great injustices of the universe is he takes home a decent dollar to write that crap, while I do better journalism on this blog for free.

But I digress. CBC has featured a number of stories contrasting our government's approach to Ukrainian vs. Afghan refugees.

For the brown Muslim refugees, we set a quota, provide oodles of hoops to jump through, and close our embassy in Afghanistan to make that hoop-jumping paper-shuffling all but impossible.

For the white Christian refugees, COME ON IN!!!

No paperwork! No hoops! Automatic two year work visa at the door!

Hmm...

Hey Brodie, good on you and your team for not letting that slide!

Now if I may make a suggestion.

CBC's news coverage has for three weeks excluded virtually anything from other conflict zones. How are things going in the Afghanistan we once loved so much 158 Canadians died for... I'm not sure what, but let's not forget their sacrifice so readily.

How's things going with Somalia, another shithole where Canada left its mark. Remember that?

We're owed updates on a few other unstable shitholes where we were all-in to help Uncle Sam and our NATO allies restore stability, like Libya, Kosovo, Mali, and other non-white zones.

Zoom out a little from that white-on-white spectacle playing itself out in Ukraine. The news should be about more than stupid white people.

Twenty-thousand Afghan refugees no longer have access to Canadian embassy abandoned in Kabul

Just two days ago I mocked our virtue-signalling goofball PM for announcing 20,000 more visa slots for Afghan collaborators. This generous gesture followed by a full seven years Canada's cutting and running, during which time our government was happy enough to do nothing for those we have abandoned, and comes as the murdering scumbags we once promised to obliterate are overrunning Kabul.

Two days later, Ottawa shutters the Kabul embassy. Canadian staff are being spirited out of country on US military helicopters. Local staff are being abandoned to the tender mercies of the Taliban.

Good luck to ya, fellas, and especially gals. We did all we could, but obviously you didn't try hard enough.

So with the embassy shut down, how are the candidates for those 20,000 "service-to-Canada" visas supposed to get their paperwork in order?

One can't blame them if they see Canadians as opportunistic and dishonourable cowards.

The number one opportunistic and dishonourable coward in this disgraceful PR stunt, designed to deflect attention from years of indifference to the plight of these people, happens to be running for re-election at the moment.

Justin Trudeau.

Pope Francis admits to kissing feet of Muslim migrants

Apparently he wisely washed their feet first!

And who wouldn't? I mean, if you're into kissing the feet of some dude who walked to Rome from Kabul, you'd be well advised to give those feet a good scrub first, wouldn't you?

The think tank here at falling downs couldn't be more aboard with the Pope's humanitarianism; we truly are all brothers, are we not? The Catholic, the Hindu, the Muslim, the Jew... we are all children of the same God.

But it might take some time for the general public to get on the feel-good bandwagon, especially after that latest business in Brussels, and in the interval I sense a business opportunity.

Trump may think he's gonna build a fence down the middle of the Rio Grande, but it's an engineering challenge of a completely different order of magnitude to build one down the middle of the Adriatic Sea. As in, it ain't gonna happen in our lifetimes. Even the Israelis, wall-builders extraordinaire, couldn't pull that off.

That means the Adriatic will be wide open for the foreseeable future. Wide open for what, you ask? Wide open for stuffing the cuddy of your Donzi 45 with a couple dozen desperate migrants and heading for Otranto or Brindisi with those triple supercharged big-blocks at redline!

A couple of dozen would fit comfortably in the front of a Donzi 45, especially if you took out the pimp-den and the galley. You'd be marketing to the premium refugee, of course. The riff-raff are paying scoundrels two thousand euros to lead them to a razor wire fence on the Bulgarian border. The premium class will be happy to pay ten thousand a head to be led ashore in Italy.

Did you realize that it's hardly fifty miles from Albania to Italy at the narrowest point in the Adriatic? A round trip is gonna be what, an hour and a half? You could do three or four a day as long as the demand holds up!

And there's nothing in the Italian navy that's gonna get near you. True, they could blow you up good with a heat-seeking missile, but imagine the global headlines on that!

It'll never happen.

So I figure, as long as you have a fast enough fast-boat, you're good to go!

The house I grew up in

Both my parents came of age in refugee camps in Denmark. It wasn't till a few years later, after they'd been repatriated to a Germany as foreign to them as Timbuktu, that they hooked up.

Not long after that they set sail for Canada. They arrived at Pier 21 owing the government of Canada their ship fare.

I remember our house beside the railroad tracks. Mr. Jackson was an occasional visitor. While I wouldn't have known it at the time Mr. Jackson was an old-school hobo who went wherever the train tracks took him. My folks would see this raggedy bag of shit wandering around and invite him in for a shave and a bath and a meal.

From time to time Mr. Jackson took them up on the offer.

Then there was Mr. Wiener. Word was he was a Jew. He played the piano when he came to our house. We had a piano because my mother (and I am 100% sure none of the impetus for the piano came from my father) always imagined herself playing one.

So Mr. Wiener, who played the piano in our house, and also played the piano in the church my folks dragged me to at the time, was presented as a Jew who had seen some sort of light.

I remember as a child of no more than five or six going to a Synagogue in Hamilton to attend his daughter's bat mitzva. Her daddy had embraced the tribe of Jesus?

In hindsight, I realize he's just a guy who enjoyed playing the piano. He did what he had to do.

But Mr. Wiener's piano playing led me into seven or eight years of piano lessons with John Goobie, who was also a frequent visitor in the house I grew up in.

John's eldest daughter Beth went on to make a name for herself as a writer of children's books. Virtually everything she has ever written embeds a brutal subtext of child abuse. For years and years I spent half an hour a week in a dimly lit room with her dad, who according to her was a satanic child abuser. All I remember is happy family outings with their family and mine, and the excruciating boredom of my piano lessons.

In the end I did manage to pass my Royal Conservatory grade eight piano exam. Today I am hard pressed to find middle "C".

As I was winding down piano lessons my father was going from factory hand to entrepreneur. One of his first hires was a gay guy prominent in the local hot-rodder community. That would not have been a place to "come out" at the time.

He was on the payroll till the day he died, of complications from Hep C/AIDS thirty years later. My parents treated him like family and spent lots of time at his bedside as he was going down for the last time.

By then there was a steady stream of Vietnamese refugees flowing through my family's home. They still flood my parents with gifts at every holiday season.

In my late thirties I had to briefly (probably not so "briefly" in my parent's view) take advantage of their second floor to take refuge with my children after a marital collapse and a house fire on the other side.

This was cut short by a new wave of Muslim refugees from Afghanistan. Ya, yours truly was kicked out of the family home to make room for towellers.

But it was time to move on, and those Afghan refugees got traction there and have gone on to make productive lives for themselves in both Canada and the US.

They too remind my parents of their gratitude at every holiday season.

Along the way there has been the love affair with the Chinese entrepreneur who used to run several restaurants in Ontario and has many pictures of herself posing with senior officials in the Communist regime in China, and the pictures of my parents at a Sikh wedding.

They are getting on in years, my folks, but once or twice a week you'll find them serving dinner at one of the homeless shelters in Guelph.

I could not be more proud.
