Cognitive dissonance and our "ironclad" support for Israel

The Freeland-Trudeau team like to go out of their way to pose as Trump-defying humanists, stalwarts of the international anti-Trump resistance. That's a pose meant primarily for the domestic audience, where pretend resistance scores a lot of political points among great swathes of the populace.

In the real world, we're 100% in with the Israel-KSA-USA axis of virtue. How else to explain our dithering over our biggest arms sale ever? How else to explain Chrystia's grovelling performance in Jerusalem last week?

The IDF turkey shoot at the Gaza fence continues week in and week out, with nary a peep from our dynamic duo of "feminist foreign policy," save for that one ill-advised slip of the tongue on Trudeau's part back in May, when he accidentally misspoke about the need for an impartial inquiry into the IDF's multiple murders of unarmed Palestinians. That brief outburst of sanity went missing immediately.

Maybe Kushner made a phone call.

No, we're proud to offer our "unwavering and ironclad support" for the Trump-loving Likudniks who are systematically destroying Israel and turning it into a loathsome apartheid pariah.

The things we say when we really mean John Baird

Bitter.
Small-minded.
Childish grand-standing.
Simplistic moral absolutes.
Bluster and noise.
Bluster and intransigence.
Politics of fear and division.

But at least Baird gets a pat on the back for his tireless promotion of gay rights internationally.

Attaboy, John!

FM Baird claims new and improved Foreign Policy "not about jobs"

He is of course referring to the recently formalized strategy of making the "extractive industries" the centrepiece of Canada's so-called "foreign policy".

He's absolutely right; in no way can any aspect of this policy be mistaken for being about jobs for Canadians.

Rather, it is about mining ventures domiciled in Canada using government infrastructure to further their interests around the world.

Our "foreign aid" is to be piggybacked on this, as is our foreign policy.

"Jobs for Canadians" has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Mining with Jesus

Now there's a match made in heaven! The "followers of Jesus" at World Vision and the disciples of Mammon at Barrick Gold, together bringing "development" Canadian style to the benighted indigenous communities of Peru.

That's a pilot project referenced by Canada's International Cooperation Minister Julian Fantino in his speech to the Economic Club of Toronto on Friday.

The Harper gang wants to get more bang for the buck out of it's foreign aid budget. Specifically, more bang for Canadian corporations out of taxpayers bucks, and what the hell, if you can get away with calling it "foreign aid" so much the better!

Alas, not everyone is impressed with Barrick's humanitarian initiatives in Peru. In fact, people have died resisting Barrick's development plans.

Shame on Fantino and the rest of the Harper gang for trying to fob off  such egregious bullshit as foreign aid, and shame on the good folks at CIDA for playing along with it.

Mossad still using Canadian passports for black ops?

This is a question that flares up every few years. It's flaring up again. The London Sunday Times claimed this week that the use of foreign passports is in fact an ongoing policy in the Israeli secret service.

But I don't think they're still using Canadian passports, and here's why.

When Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird did his tour of Israel last week, personal ultra-orthodox Rabbi in tow, he made such an embarrassing spectacle of himself that frankly, Canadian passports just attract too much attention.

When Canada's Foreign Minister repeats dozens of times on one trip the mantra that "Israel has no better friend in the world than Canada", well, there's quite a lot of places where they're going to raise eyebrows when they see a Canadian passport.

Our passports were much more useful back when we were a quiet supporter of Israel. A Canadian passport got you into and out of a lot of nasty places because we were seen as a more or less neutral entity. Sure, we're pretty much limited in how far we can deviate from the path set out for us by our big neighbor to the south, but right back to the Pearson era there was a strain of independent thinking in Canadian foreign policy.

A few years ago that would have made a Canadian passport a useful tool for Mossad.

With the ascent of the Harperites and the slavish pro-Likud turn that Canadian foreign policy has taken, Mossad agents will attract less attention using Israeli passports.
