This is the tits-up moment for war-monger number one, Senator John McCain.
John's been lobbying for war with Syria for the last two years.
All of America's besties are busy on Saturday night.
Canada is scheduled for a shampoo and curl.
The Brits have let the democracy cat out of the bag and seem to be scaling down the war rhetoric in favour of the will of the people.
The only NATO ally still on board is Francois Hollande. The poor devil is determined to win his spurs one way or another. Mali didn't quite do it, so he has been hoping for a second chance.
And of course the only democracy in the middle east would dearly love to see an all-out assault on the people of the towel, but the Likud crowd must be beyond despairing that such a thing is going to happen this time around.
Maybe even a few of the smarty-pants know-it-alls around Obama have concluded that dumping Assad isn't worth risking WW III.
So carry on with the whatever, Mr. Assad; we were just joking around with that "red line" shit.
Twenty-four hours ago, the Nations of Virtue were coordinating their plans to annihilate Syria.
Tonight they're not.
There is hope for humanity.

Turkey vows to smash Kurdish resistance in Syria
See the last paragraph in this article from Hurriyet.
That's not the kind of talk you would have heard from Ankara back when Assad still had a firm grip on the levers of power.
The Kurdish resistance in Syria is determined to carve out Kurdish enclaves in the face of the al-Qaeda led civil war in Syria. In the convoluted arithmetic of the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine this seems to be making the Kurds friends of Assad.
Which is just one more indigestible nugget on Erdogan's plate. He has stuck his neck out way too far on behalf of his fairweather NATO compatriots in facilitating the Syrian "uprising." At the same time he continues to fight a rearguard action against the "secularist" forces that permeate the "deep state" in Turkey.
Erdogan is slowly but determinedly painting himself into a corner. He is too Islamist for the secularists, too secular for the Islamists, and none of his allies trust him.
What better time to pick a fight with the Kurds in Syria!

The blossoming of the Syria Salvation Strategy
Hillary has succeeded with the Doha operation to imbue an American-sponsored Syrian opposition with the aura of legitimacy. The Gulf Cooperation Council, those Sunni state-lets fully dependent on American largess for their continued existence, were quick to rubber stamp the newly formed "We're Not The SNC We're Totally Different Revolutionary Coalition" (WNTSNCWTDRC) as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people today.
Their rubber stamp was quickly followed up by another from the Arab league.
One of the disturbing truths that Washington and her allies in the Nations of Virtue and their media will be struggling to obscure in the coming weeks is the fact that virtually none of the fighters on the ground in Syria answer to anyone in the newly minted cadre of "legitimate representatives."
That means building a reliable revolutionary army from the ground up while Syria is in flames. While that job is already well underway across the border in Turkey, it will take US/NATO minders on the ground in Syria to keep an eye on who is receiving American arms and money.
This new "legitimate" entity will also pave the way for at least a partial no-fly zone in Syria as soon as the new representatives of the Syrian people can get at least a few representatives on the ground in Syria to justify calling for one. This will enable a repetition of the Libyan strategy of NATO bombing paving the way with Paveway smart bombs for our rebels.
There is a complication in Syria, of course. What of the rebels that are already fighting in the country, and do not take their orders from this new al-Attasi/ al-Khatib/ Sabra/ Saif (AASS, another acronym if you find WNTSNCWTDRC too unwieldy) pro-USA group?
Aye, that is a complication indeed, but only for the people of Syria. In the Nations of Virtue the prospect of having rival Islamist groups fight it out over the next generation or two isn't seen as an altogether unpleasant prospect.
Remember, the same crowd in Washington who did everything they could to provoke and prolong the Iran/Iraq war are engineering the Syrian Salvation Strategy.

Erdogan being hung out to dry by Western allies
A year ago Turkey's Prime Minister was gung ho for doing the dirty work for his masters in Washington and London and Brussels. He generously made his country available as the staging ground for the jihadi hordes streaming towards Damascus to take down the infidel Assad.
The fall of the Assad regime was imminent, both he and we were assured on a daily basis.
A year later, Assad shows no sign of weakening, the daily predictions of the imminent collapse of his regime have vanished, the cheerleading from Western media has been replaced by caution over just who those rebels might be, and Turks are taking to the streets by the tens of thousands to protest their government's strategy toward their southern neighbor.
What an irony if Assad were to outlast Erdogan!
Meanwhile, the Kurdish separatist factions have seized their moment of opportunity and are more active than they have been for years. That puts Erdogan in the unenviable position of braying about Assad "slaughtering his own people" while he slaughters his own Kurds.
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has been making reassuring noises about standing with Erdogan in the event of a war with Syria. While we should all hope that this promise will never be tested, when the stark choice becomes backing the Turks and having a regional war, or waving goodbye to Erdogan and sending our regrets, it will be bye-bye Erdogan.

Libya: heavily-armed militias out-gun government forces
Don't take my word for it; that's from Interior Minister Fawzi Abdelali.
According to Reuters, there's nothing the government can do about it. This is worth keeping in mind as certain members of the Nations of Virtue gang edge closer to getting directly involved in Syria.
Wouldn't it be a good idea for NATO to clean up after its last mess before striking out on a new adventure?

French military "advisers" captured in Homs
The mythology surrounding Syrian Spring has been taking a beating these past few weeks.
RT News has been reporting all day that at least two French officers have been taken into custody in Homs. That would be further evidence of direct NATO involvement in the Syria conflict. Several weeks ago a number of Turkish "advisers" were captured by the Syrian Army.
The reigning narrative of "brutal military regime slaughters unarmed protesters" also suffered a blow when BBC and others broadcast footage of gunbattles in Homs. You can't have a gun battle unless both sides have guns. If the Crips or the Bloods or the Hells Angels sent armed gangs into Washington what do you suppose the response would be?
"Obama regime slaughters unarmed protesters?"
Meanwhile, back in Paris, birthplace of the Syrian revolution and the Libyan one before it, the Free Syrian Government in Exile staged a presser to proclaim that it was now in charge of all military action in the country, a claim immediately denied by a number of other opposition groups both inside and out of Syria.
Arab Spring is long over.
Welcome to NATO's nightmare.

NATO back-pedaling furiously over Syria
"We have no intention whatsoever of intervening in Syria" NATO boss Anders Rasmussen announced today from Ankara, where he has been overseeing the negotiations to free 49 NATO intelligence advisers held by the Syrian Army.
Which begs the question; how did those NATO advisers get captured in
Syria, if we're not interfering already?
And from Mexico, where she's helping celebrate the success of the War on Drugs, Hillary Clinton tweeted this morning that the US continues to stand behind the Syrian opposition and support the "protesters".
It's not like the NATO boss to contradict his US masters.
So is Rasmussen back-pedaling or just lying?
The think tank here at Falling Downs believes that this is a bit of strategic fibbing in the course of negotiations.
Once the NATO advisers have been released it'll be back to a full court press for "humanitarian intervention."
And we all know what that looks like.
