The CBC has a telling story on view today about the lengths the Harper gang is going to keep Roma out of the country.
Do a little research and it won't take you long to discover that Roma people pretty much get the dirty end of the stick in many European "Nations of Virtue." Hungary is one of the least hospitable countries on the continent for the Roma. Indeed, before Harper and company got tough on crime and brownish people, Roma were often successful in petitioning Canada for refugee status.
Guess those days are over!
Seems the Canadian Border Services Agency has a team in Budapest to screen Roma who are lined up at the airport for flights to Canada. They can have every relevant travel document in perfect order but be denied their trip simply on some CBSA flunky's suspicion that they could be Roma.
If they were doing this in Canada it would be considered a disgrace. It would violate the Charter of Rights. This policy would be facing multiple court challenges in short order.
So why are we doing it in Hungary?
I guess "Canadian values" don't travel well.

Stephen Harper: big sled, no dogs
That was actually one of the wittier moments in this "debate."
It was Justin who nailed Big Steve with that one.
It happened when the moderator steered the conversation north.
One of the more cogent moments came when Rudy asked how those 15 ice-breakers for the Royal Canadian Navy were coming along. Rudy was rude enough to mention that Russia actually has 40 boats in her ice-breaker fleet, whereas Big Steve only has 40 announcements of an imaginary fleet of 15 ice-breakers.
Big Steve replies by pointing out that his government has expanded Nihanni National Park.
A complete non-sequitor.
Or maybe not.
Nihanni National Park is in the Arctic after all.

Will one picture of a dead toddler be a game-changer?
Not in Canada.
The Farm Manager actually asked me that question.
Will one picture of a dead toddler be a game-changer?
It's a question that has Media Studies 101 written all over it...
We've certainly tamped down on the "sociology" here during the Harper years. You know, the sociology that suggests that when you kill somebody's parents and grandparents, their children and grandchildren make it their life's work to kill you and your grandchildren and grandparents in return...
Yup, a lot of those backward folks in the Middle East buy into that kind of shit.
Which is something the morons in Ottawa should have given some thought to before they embarked on their "let's bomb ISIS" mission.
But, in for a penny, in for a pound, as the saying goes...

It's all over for Harper's Holy Rollers
The visceral contempt that the Canadian public has for Big Steve and his gang of bullies is flowering into a new genre of protest songs. That's kinda ironic considering that Big Steve is the most overtly musical PM we've had since Lyin' Brian crooned that duet with Ronald Reagan all those many years ago.
Check this out.
And this!
Once a leader achieves this level of public ridicule, it's gonna be really hard to come back.
At the end of the day, Stephen Harper may well have inadvertently become the most significant facilitator of Canadian unity in the history of Canada.
Canadians are uniting against Harper!

Royal Canadian Navy spends $150,000 per day to rent foreign supply ship
Apparently that's because the new Canadian supply ships that the politicians have been promising since 2004 remain on the drawing board.
And that's because the Harper gang believes in getting the most bang for the taxpayers dollar. They have long concluded that they get the most bang with the announcement of a new shipbuilding project. That's why the Harper years have been one continuous smorgasbord of ship-building announcements. The new supply ships, the new ice-breakers, the new coastal patrol vessels; all have been repeatedly announced.
Many have even been named!
None have been built!
Because actually building the ships that the Harper gang keeps announcing would cost way more than simply announcing them. The bang for the buck quotient goes right down the shitter.
So don't think of the pitiful state of the Royal Canadian Navy as a Harper fail; see it instead as evidence of shrewd stewardship of hard-working Canadians' tax dollars.

No wonder Gwyn Morgan hates big government
Gwyn had himself a snappy little paean to Big Steve in yesterday's Globe and Mail, titled Some vital perspective on the economic record. Oddly enough, it appeared just as a recent research paper by economist Jim Stanford was getting some traction. Stanford's conclusion?
The Harper gang have been the worst stewards of Canada's economy in the post-war era.
Now if there's one thing Mr. Morgan hates almost as much as big government, it's lefty economists. Gywn comes to Harper's rescue by claiming that the hoo-ha over Harper's long-promised surplus having, at the eleventh hour, become a deficit, is taking a tiny tiny deficit and blowing it out of all perspective. "How significant is a $2.9 billion change in an $890 billion budget? The answer is that it amounts to less than a third of one percent," Gwyn dismissively informs us.
Except Gwyn has one little fact wrong; the federal budget is about $620 billion less than the imaginary number he made up for his article. So that $2.9 billion trifle is over one percent, not "less than one third of 1 per cent."
That's the problem with folks who see "big government" as a monster hiding under the bed; it gets so much bigger in the imagination than it actually is in reality. Or maybe there's some "unreported budget" coming from the same wizards who invented that Harperite stroke of genius, the increase in "unreported crime."
Be that as it may, Gwyn does bring us some perspective. He's obviously a big-picture guy who doesn't fuss too much about the accuracy of the details... maybe that explains how tens of millions in bribe money wafted out of the SNC-Lavalin accounts while he was chair of the board of directors.

Harper gang still in Reefer Madness mode
I see where Rona Ambrose, minister for the department of Just Say No, has grabbed a couple million taxpayer dollars to hammer down the Harperite anti-drug message just in time for the fall election.
You gotta give the Harper dinosaurs credit for something; they keep tilting at the same windmills long after the times have passed them by.
And while I have to admire their tilting, I have to say I'm not impressed that all that tilting comes at the expense of the taxpayer. Taxpayers like you and me, who, "legal" marijuana be damned, are going to fire one up once in awhile whether we have one of those bogus prescriptions or not.
Rona is the Harper cabinet minister who went apoplectic recently over the Supreme Court decision to allow edible pot, as in if you had a legal pot script you were entitled to take your meds in a brownie instead of having to smoke them.
That Supreme Court decision pretty much frosted it for Rona.
Democracy is a dicey proposition in the hands of pot-heads.
So Rona is gonna use a few more millions of taxpayer dollars to try and convince you that she's right and the Supreme Court of Canada and the rest of the sentient world are wrong.

STRONG PROUD FREE
In case you haven't noticed, Harper's Canada has a brand new brand...
Strong. Proud. Free.
It's no coincidence that this bit of jingoistic claptrap pops up six months before a federal election. No Canadian government in history has been as free with spending taxpayer money on partisan self-promotion. By associating strength, pride, and freedom with the Harper gang, we're also being told who's not about being strong, proud and free.
That would be the Liberal party of Justin the pot-head.
Whimpy. Poofy. Fickle.
To say nothing of the party that once was socialist but wants you to know they aren't anymore, Mulcair's NDP.
Where do you even go with that?
Whacky, pathetic... no longer socialist?
See what I mean?
So if you're a true-blue loyal Canadian who loves this country, y'all make sure you and the little woman head out to the polling station come October and mark an X for Big Steve and the only party that cares about freedom and democracy.
Vote for Canada.
Vote Conservative.

The vile anti-Muslim hate-mongering of the Harper gang
Glen McGregor at the Ottawa Citizen has exposed a brazenly cynical tweet by Defence Minister Jason Kenney wherein he commemorates International Women's Day by thanking the Canadian Forces for joining the fight against ISIS. No need to thank them Mr. Kenney. You're the Defence Minister; they're just following your orders!
So Mr. Kenney is really just thanking himself.
What's revealing about McGregor's story is that Kenney used several fraudulent photo-props that are alleged evidence of the heinous nature of the wannabe Caliphate. He tweeted pictures of Shia religious festivals during which some women participants are decked out in mock chains. In his tweet, the Shiite worshippers have become Sunni terrorists!
Guess we can't expect our leaders to be particularly discerning about who's who in the world 'o towel-heads... they're all terror suspects after all.
The anti-Islam hysteria of the Harper gang has become so obvious that even Harper-friendly mainstream media are commenting on it.
Here's a sample from the Globe and Mail.
And here's Martin Patriquin at the Harper-loving Macleans Magazine with a story called Stephen Harper and the niqab gambit, calling out Harper for his rampant fear-mongering.
Big Steve doesn't seem worried. True, the Globe and Macleans may be ideological fellow-travellers, but they're the kind of allies who can also be found giving sociology serious consideration from time to time, if not outright "doing" sociology.
They're a long way from the base that he's hoping to scare into voting for him in the upcoming election.
