I see where Rona Ambrose, minister for the department of Just Say No, has grabbed a couple million taxpayer dollars to hammer down the Harperite anti-drug message just in time for the fall election.
You gotta give the Harper dinosaurs credit for something; they keep tilting at the same windmills long after the times have passed them by.
And while I have to admire their tilting, I have to say I'm not impressed that all that tilting comes at the expense of the taxpayer. Taxpayers like you and me, who, "legal" marijuana be damned, are going to fire one up once in awhile whether we have one of those bogus prescriptions or not.
Rona is the Harper cabinet minister who went apoplectic recently over the Supreme Court decision to allow edible pot, as in if you had a legal pot script you were entitled to take your meds in a brownie instead of having to smoke them.
That Supreme Court decision pretty much frosted it for Rona.
Democracy is a dicey proposition in the hands of pot-heads.
So Rona is gonna use a few more millions of taxpayer dollars to try and convince you that she's right and the Supreme Court of Canada and the rest of the sentient world are wrong.

Fahmy family lashes out at Canadian govt
Mohamed Fahmy's family in Canada has had some rude things to say about the Harper government's utter disinterest in the case.
Can't say I blame them.
Have to admit the think tank here at Falling Downs believed Baird was going to make Fahmy's release his swan song. Apparently five millions wasn't enough to seal the deal. After all, what's five million from Canada when Mad-Dog-Putin shows up a week later and puts a multi-billion nuclear energy program on the table?
Canada under the Harper gang has never missed an opportunity to poke Putin in the eye. Had we been but a tad more diplomatic in our "diplomacy," it's not hard to imagine Putin lobbying for the release of our Canadian journalist. (Interesting to read the comments for the NP article and see how many Canadians don't consider Fahmy a "Canadian.") The non-stop anti-Putin vitriol out of Ottawa for the last decade could give al-Sisi a motive to keep Fahmy just to suck up to Putin.
Ironically, at the time al-Sisi was deposing the democratically elected Morsi, he was getting nothing but accolades from Canadian media and the Harper gang. The praise was virtually universal.
And there he is today, holding hands with Putin.
Obviously we've had some shortcomings in the world 'o diplomacy...
As for the Fahmys, I understand their confusion. The Canada they thought they moved to when they arrived here twenty-five years ago isn't the Canada they live in today.
Sorry about your luck, folks, but you'll get more sympathy from the Egyptian embassy than from the government of Canada.

With voter turnout at almost 40%, Ukraine election seen as great success!
You always know your "democracy" is in trouble when over half the eligible voters can't be bothered to vote. That seems to be the case with today's election in Ukraine.
That dismal turn-out comes in spite of the Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird having issued an inspirational paean to the virtues of freedom and democracy mere hours before the polls opened. Ya gotta love that bit about "resiliency and determination for a better future."
We'll see how the Ukrainians feel about freedom and democracy when they get the full course treatment of Frau Merkel's austerity enema!
Goodbye dreams of European integration!
You'll note that Baird boasts of Canada's generous complement of Ukrainian-Canadian election observers on the ground. That observer mission breaks the cardinal rule of election observer missions; don't empower partisans to determine the fairness of elections.
While that might look beyond sketchy in the rest of the world, the Harper gang is counting on big numbers from the Ukrainian-Canadian community in the next Canadian Federal Election.
Last time round, Big Steve won a majority on the strength of 25% of eligible voters.
Since then, there's been a lot of Canadians shaking their heads at the multiplicity of anti-democratic initiatives emanating from Harper's government.
If those grateful hyphenated Ukrainians turn up to vote, they could make all the difference in the next Canadian federal election.
The Harper gang's Ukraine policy is absolutely brazen self-serving political opportunism and little else.

Neil Young on the Harper gang; "integrity isn't even on the map"
Amen, dude. I've been saying that for years.
Young was speaking at a brief presser before the first of four Canadian concerts that will raise money for First Nations that have ongoing legal battles over tar sands projects.
Do you ever question why First Nations have to fight for their rights in our justice system?
Shouldn't we be fighting for our right to despoil the earth in their justice system?
After all, it's their land we're talking about, isn't it?
Lets have the oil industry bigs sit down with a council of elders and make their case.
That would be the right thing to do... or would have been forty years ago when the tar-sludge gold rush was in its infancy.
You're a little late to the ongoing ecological and social disaster, Mr. Young, but at least when rich white dudes take up the torch, folks might start to pay attention.
It's not too late to get integrity back on the map.

NEWS FLASH!!! Rich people live longer!
Who knew?
Common sense just screams out that all those poor folks massed on their couches of complacency awaiting their next government cheque would live way longer. After all, talk about a life of no worries!
Meanwhile, those poor rich folks have to negotiate a never-ending gauntlet of lying lawyers, crooked investment advisers, random stock market fluctuations, odious government tax grabs, and the masses of poor people scheming to steal their stuff.
It can't be easy!
But apparently all that stress makes the rich folks live longer!
That news comes from research done by Statistics Canada.
No wonder the Harper gang has been working so hard to make those "social scientists" shut up!
If the poor folks catch wind of this they might get even pissier...

Canada sweeps podium at hypocricy championships
Four stories. They're all tied together. See if you can follow the trail.
The Law and Order Party that governs Canada is made up of manly men and a few manly women who don't mind letting you know they're all about traditional values. Peace. Order. Good governance. They've got a Law and Order Bill coming down the pipeline as I write this. They're going to get tough on crime, and it's about time. Crime rates in Canada have been trending down for twenty years. If you're going to get tough on crime you'd better do it while you still have some.
Headline from a couple of years ago; "Two Canadian diplomats freed after hostage ordeal in Africa." These guys had been held hostage by al-Qaeda for months. At the time, Prime Minister Harper stated flat-out that Canada does not pay ransoms.
Headline from this week; "International concern that Canada paid ransom to al Qaeda." Oopsie. And here's another one from this week, from the national newspaper of record; "Gadhafi regime helped broker release of Canadian envoys". Would that be that Gadhafi? Double oopsie.
Hmmm. Seems a certain Steven Harper was lying to us about that ransom business. Ironically, this last headline appeared on the same day that Canada's parliament, i.e. the Harper gang, voted to extend the Libyan bombing campaign three more months, because apparently there are still civilians there who need our protection from Gadhafi. The announcement was accompanied by the usual chest-thumping bombast about Canadian values and democracy and freedom and blah blah blah. Two years ago we were sucking up to Gadhafi. Now we're bombing the beejeezus out of him.
If this kind of nefarious back-stabbing double-dealing seems out of character for a bunch of law and order Bible-thumpers, bear in mind it is all for a greater cause. As the Globe and Mail story makes clear, our main concern in all matters Libyan is to protect Canada's huge commercial interests in Libyan oil and gas. Ahh.. now it all makes sense. Goodbye Gadhafi, hello NTC.
But it's all about our democratic values.
