You'd think that with his pension for 23 years as a Toronto police officer, his pensions from three different cities where he served as chief of police, his pension from his stint as OPP commish, his MP pension, and his OAS and CPP pensions, veteran crime-fighter Julian Fantino would be spending his golden years under a beach umbrella making origami sculptures with his financial statements.
You'd be wrong!
Fantino has joined fellow top cop Raf Souccar, former Deputy Commissioner at the RCMP, in opening up a medical marijuana joint in Vaughn, north of Toronto.
As the CBC story points out, this is the same guy who once equated the legalization of pot with the legalization of murder.
I for one am glad that "science and the real world" have caused these gentlemen to reconsider the error of their Reefer Madness-inspired vendetta against pot smokers over the past fifty years.
The folks Julian and Raf put behind bars for their pot-related indiscretions will surely appreciate the irony of this story too!

Aging pothead meets "new" pot
There's a story in lamestream Canadian media today about how Big Steve's re-election campaign is skewing science to justify their rabid anti-marijuana campaign.
Yes, the Harperite fight on drug use is oh-so-very-1955.
To qualify as a Harper candidate you were forced to watch Reefer Madness back to back three times and then write a policy paper outlining how you would handle the drug scourge.
One thing I can agree with the Harperites on is that today's marijuana is not your grand-daddy's marijuana.
I found that out a few years ago.
I'm old enough to be your grampa, and I still like to twist one up now and then, so listen here;
I'd just burned one with the national sales manager of a major foreign car manufacturer. The national sales manager was a really good guy to know because he could get you a great deal on a prestige car brand. He smoked this shit every day.
Shortly after burning that one, the family gathered for pictures with the dude of honour at that get together. The occasion was the 70th birthday of said sales manager's daddy.
I was there, in a million dollar townhouse a few steps from Bloor and Bay, which is probably a three million dollar townhouse today, smoking a joint with the national sales manager for a foreign car company that I will not name.
Right after we burned that doobie, somebody got the clan together for a family portrait with the birthday boy.
I'm in those family portraits, casually leaning back against the fireplace mantle, just to the right of the birthday boy.
Half an hour after that, I was still leaning back against the fireplace mantle.
I'd smoked a modern joint, and I was fucked!
I could not move!
I'd been puffing on the weed of wisdom for forty years before that day happened... but I'd never encountered that paralyzing boogie...
Ya, the "new" pot isn't what Willie Nelson grew up on...

Harper gang still in Reefer Madness mode
I see where Rona Ambrose, minister for the department of Just Say No, has grabbed a couple million taxpayer dollars to hammer down the Harperite anti-drug message just in time for the fall election.
You gotta give the Harper dinosaurs credit for something; they keep tilting at the same windmills long after the times have passed them by.
And while I have to admire their tilting, I have to say I'm not impressed that all that tilting comes at the expense of the taxpayer. Taxpayers like you and me, who, "legal" marijuana be damned, are going to fire one up once in awhile whether we have one of those bogus prescriptions or not.
Rona is the Harper cabinet minister who went apoplectic recently over the Supreme Court decision to allow edible pot, as in if you had a legal pot script you were entitled to take your meds in a brownie instead of having to smoke them.
That Supreme Court decision pretty much frosted it for Rona.
Democracy is a dicey proposition in the hands of pot-heads.
So Rona is gonna use a few more millions of taxpayer dollars to try and convince you that she's right and the Supreme Court of Canada and the rest of the sentient world are wrong.
