Drumpfobia splits the GOP

It's been a heady few days in the race for the White House. Chris Christie was the first high-profile establishment Republican to come out for Trump, but he's getting more and more company. Sorry Chris, that VP slot may no longer be the slam dunk it looked like at the time!

Herman Cain has clambered aboard the Trump bandwagon. That means that both black candidates from the last two election cycles are now Trump supporters. Pulls a bit of rug out from under that "Trump = racist" meme, doesn't it? That meme is of course the touchstone of the white liberal intelligentsia, the same folks who still think, this late in the game, that Hillary has any "liberal" cred whatsoever.

Rick Perry has signed up. He's a serious enough guy in traditional GOP circles. But he's got nothing on Darth Cheney, who, much to our surprise here at Falling Downs, has climbed aboard too.

Maybe it was the heart transplant?

And then there's Sheldon. Sheldon and Donald have at times been bitter rivals. I think in the course of their rivalry, Sheldon has perhaps prevailed in the net worth rankings. But he's gotta have nothing but respect for Trump for the way he has steam-rolled over the duds Sheldon was financing. The fact that Sheldon can admit his mistakes says a lot about the man... he's not a complete shitbag after all!

Meanwhile, back in Crawford, W has poutily declined to support the "presumptive" GOP nominee. Seems the entire Bush clan are having a group sulk because Trump made mincemeat out of Jeb without really trying. Jeb wasted what, $150 millions on his DOA campaign?

Holy Christ! It's not hard to see why the Bushes are bitter!

Paul Ryan still has wet dreams about being in the oval office himself someday, so he's hedging his bets. And when I say "in the oval office" I mean sitting behind the big desk. The reason he's hedging his bets is because there's a lot of GOP bigs coming out, if you can imagine such a thing, for Dem front-runner Hillary!

Most of the PNAC crowd is way inclined to get behind Hillary, and it's not hard to see why. Trump is a loose cannon. He's unpredictable. He could conceivably do all kinds of scary shit; get along with Putin, stop overthrowing governments we don't like, abrogate the trade deals that have disembowelled America's working class, and so on.

Hillary, on the other hand, is gonna continue the tried and true course of perpetual war and the never-ending sell-out of working Americans. Let's face it - that's a formula that works for a huge slice of the American oligarchy!

So we've got a Manhattan lib hi-jacking the GOP, and a Dem candidate far to the right of the GOP candidate...

Best race ever!...

End Times indeed!

Jeb jumpstarts White House run

Former Florida Gov Jeb Bush let a carefully choreographed media plum drop from his lips the other day; he "might" consider a White House run for 2016.

I'd say that's a full-on declaration of intent.

Good! There's been a certain amount of reticence in getting the 2016 fires burning, which leaves guys like me with a shortage of stuff to write about.

But we have a long way to go before we reach cruising speed.

We need some colourful characters, like the quintessential carpetbagger the Newtster, or his slightly brown doppelganger the Herminator, before this horse race becomes interesting.

Till that Bridgegate fiasco I truly thought The Christie Doughboy would be in the mix, but he's pretty much bake-pan scrapings now. The Mittster could still declare, but he's forever tainted by that "corporations are people too" gaffe, and even though it may be truer than ever, it's not something that you want to trot out as a truism at election time.

Scott Walker and Rand Paul are too wet behind the ears to be taken seriously.

So for now, that leaves Jeb way out front.

On the Dem side, there's not much happening. If Hillary is truly the best they can do for the nomination, they richly deserve the dustbin of history.

Bill Cosby's political aspirations have been snuffed...

Both sides could do a lot to liven up this race. How about a Jesse Ventura run up the left side? Maybe bring Colin Powell aboard as VP - that would tick a few boxes!

Whatreallyhappened boss Michael Rivero recently announced his mission to save humanity, but I fear he has become too cynical to be anything but a 3rd party candidate. Still, he's a guy who has a high media profile, and that'll matter going forward.

Alas, I'm getting ahead of myself, speculating on dark horses left, right, and in the margins...

Let the games begin!

Commie blogger sees light, applies for job at Caterpillar plant in Georgia

That's right folks!

Gonna roll up the rugs here at Falling Downs and head for the Peach State. I'll be joining up with my dream team, the Newt and Cain Travelling Revival Show.

Gonna stay awhile too.

Dusted off those welding tickets and sent my resume to Caterpillar. Got my eye on one of those twelve dollar an hour jobs at the new plant they're building just outside Athens.

Already scoped out the real estate market in the new 'hood. Figure I can find me a nice, and I mean really nice trailer within a fifteen minute drive of the plant for about fifty thou. Maybe even less if I bargain hard.

Planning to pick up some new wheels too. No point heading south with the fleet. Fellow over in Johns Creek has a almost mint '79 Lincoln Town Car on offer for a mere $3,500. Has the half-vinyl roof and the leather interior, and according to the ad almost everything works.

The '79 was the last of the big sleds. Two and a half tons of American glory floating down the Interstate! Cadillac had downsized in '77. Lincoln didn't go to the smaller platform till '80. This particular car has the 400 instead of the 460, and lacks the moon roof, but I'm sure she'll do fine for my new life in Georgia.

Coincidentally, twelve bucks an hour was what I made at Harjim Machinery Works when that Lincoln was new, but I couldn't afford it then.

Just goes to prove that good things come to those who wait long enough!

Gingrich finished in Florida

Latest polls all predict Newt's toast in Florida.

There was no bump in the numbers when Sarah Palin weighed in on behalf of the Newtster. No Cain bump either. And Sheldon needs to dig a little deeper into his bank account if he wants his boy to go head to head with Mitt in terms of television commercials.

That's democracy in America today.

It's not about ideas. It's not about integrity. It's not about track record.

Democracy in America is about who can put out the most and the best television commercials.

Adelson fumes as losers pile on the Gingrich bandwagon

Oh Sheldon, I see Herman Cain has just endorsed our boy Newt!

Herman Cain, you know, the black guy.

The pizza guy? Mr. 9-9-9? HE ENDORSED WHO?  NOT OUR NEWT OH MY GOD SO HELP ME JEEZUS I CAN'T BELIEVE WE JUST WASTED 10 MILLION ON THAT IDIOT!!!

Calm down, Sheldon. I just read a very kind profile about you on one of the Brit websites. They're a long way from asking nosy questions about exactly how you turned a trade show into a personal fortune worth billions.

But I feel your pain. Yesterday it was Sarah Palin coming out for your boy. If that wasn't bad enough, now you've got the Hermanator on your team.

And what a team it is, Sheldon. Stay with me for a minute. You got Newt, the wily carpetbagger who can't keep his pants on, and then you've got Cain, the wily pizza mogul who can't keep his pants on...

I see a whole new franchise here, Sheldon, and it's got nothing to do with gambling. It would be good to diversify anyway.

Panzeroffy's.

I don't really have to explain it, do I Sheldon? Panzerotti - Panzeroffy?

Go for it. You're paying them anyway, why not get something back for your money?

Don't let the skin tone fool you; Cain's a cracker

Stupid people are ruining America. Hmmm... I'm not sure if I agree with the Hermanator on that one. It's tempting, though, isn't it? Blame the stupid people.

There are certainly enough stupid people in America. If you believe the test scores from the international agencies that measure student achievement, Americans are becoming relatively more stupid. The think tank here at Falling Downs sees the problem as being a little more nuanced than that.

Stupid people are rarely elected to office. When was the last time an obvious cretin held a major political post? I know the name George W will immediately come up. I'm not sure that's true, but I'm pretty sure that's irrelevant. Any presidential candidate is little more than a symbolic figurehead. Every presidential campaign is run by over-educated over-achievers. Think what you like, but these people aren't stupid.

They do have a problem, however. Stupid people vote. So election campaigns are inevitably skewed towards appealing to stupid people. That's why Grover Norquist has so much power. Stupid people believe that taxes are bad. Herman Cain has a solution for stupid people who hate taxes. 9-9-9. It's catchy. Even the most stunned among us can remember 9-9-9. Nevermind that it means the richest will pay even less tax and the poor will pay more. Its got the aura of fairness and simplicity about it.

Cain likes to point out that half the population already pays 97% of all taxes. That's a sly way of saying the rich are paying more than their share. Nobody comes out and says the rich have more than their share. Let the rich pay all the taxes is what I say. What's fair about taxing the minimum wage folks at the same rate as the billionaires? According to Cain, if you're not rich you only have yourself to blame. Stop punishing those poor rich folks for their good fortune.

Given that the polls show that an Obama-Cain race is now a distinct possibility, the Hermanator has been getting schooled in the field of international diplomacy. His mentor is none other than far right nut-bar John Bolton. Cain's previous forays into international relations were limited to a few failed Godfather's franchises in Canada. Bolton is bringing him up to speed.

Bible good. Koran bad.

Turbans bad. Ballcaps good.

Israel good. Iran bad.

Bolton's not stupid either. He knows a blank slate when he sees one, and he hasn't seen one this blank since he worked for W. He knows if the cards fall the right way, he'll be Secretary of State in a year and a half.

He could even be Vice President!
