The guys who flunk terrorist training

There's a story in the news today about a terrorist attack in Kampala. Three suicide bombers blew themselves up and took out three people.

I don't imagine that 1:1 kill ratio is considered anything to be proud of in terrorist circles. Pretty sure that ain't gonna get you the 77 virgins. That's too bad, because these poor guys aren't gonna get another chance at the Terrorist Hall of Fame, are they?

Nobody on any side is gonna want to have anything to do with these losers in the afterlife.

Whenever they bust one of these terror cells, there's always talk about financing and training. Disrupting the finance networks is gonna strangle these terror cells, they tell us.

But seriously, how much training can it possibly take to get a dim-witted Muslim kid to put on a vest and push a button? And the finance requirements would be minimal too.

So three terrorists take out three random people somewhere over there. So what. We see stories all the time about one strategically placed suicide bomber taking out dozens, even hundreds. Those are the guys who get the 77 virgins!

The reason this is news is because it happened in Uganda, a pet protectorate of the Nations of Virtue. Seems this sort of stuff has been spreading in Africa, especially after we dispatched Wacky Ghadaffy.

Wasn't he the butt of every anti-Arab joke for 100 years. We toyed with him, ridiculed him, and eventually killed him. Along the way we forgot he was the guy who kept African migrants out of the Mediterranean, and thus out of Europe.

Ten years later, we profess shock that the chaos we brought to Libya has spread far beyond...

Wacky Ghadaffy's revenge!

The truth is more important now than ever

I look forward to my New York Times International Weekly, which is included at no extra charge with my Sunday Star. It gives country bumpkins like me a chance to view true world-class journalism, unlike the crap those hacks in Toronto shovel out. I also have a hunch that recycling NYT copy is way cheaper than paying their own writers for original work.

In this era of truth being more important than ever, it's surprising how much truth the Times' world-class journos forget to include in their stories. Ruth Maclean reports on the conflict in Mali, and totally forgets to mention said conflict was unleashed when the USA destroyed Libya.

Julie Turkewitz reports on the heart-breaking plight of children in Venezuela. It truly is heart-breaking, but in a half-page story, there is nary a mention of the devastating sanctions the US has imposed on the country.

Alissa Rubin informs us that these are the "worst days ever for Iraqis." The poor sods are getting it from all sides. Collapsed oil prices, a collapsed economy, collapse upon collapse, and the ever-present meddling of the Iranians behind it all. If any of Iraq's travails had anything whatsoever to do with the USA's destruction and continued occupation of the country, you'd never know it from Rubin's story.

For an outfit that coined the slogan "The truth is more important than ever," that's a pretty slovenly performance.

Putting the "fake" into real news

Doug Saunders' journalism has been gracing the pages of Canada's newspaper of record for about twenty years now. His current position is "opinion writer on international affairs" or something along those lines. As such, he's more on the analysis and commentary side of things. In other words, his job is to spin the facts into a narrative that his employer is comfortable with.
The print version of his column today is titled "The fall of Aleppo:Four sobering lessons." His four sobering lessons also appear in the online version of the story, and I have copied them verbatim below. My comments are italicised.
Doug Saunders' four sobering lessons from the fall of Aleppo
Did Aleppo "fall" or was it retaken by legitimate government forces?
1. The Islamic State was never the main problem. The territorial ambitions of the ultra-Islamist militia have ruined lives, imprisoned regions and showered terrorist outrages on Western cities. But the newly redrawn map of Syria makes the basic fact more clear: the Islamic State (also known as IS, ISIS or ISIL or Daesh) was purely a product of Mr. al-Assad’s decision to resist a mass uprising against his rule. It only remains a threat as long as he continues his fight.
ISIS was "purely a product of Mr. al-Assad's decision to resist a mass uprising against his rule." It was? Virtually any mainstream explanation of the rise of ISIS posits its roots in the US invasion of Iraq. ISIS evolved out of the radical Islamist insurgency that grew out of that invasion. That's the consensus position on virtually every news site. Mr. al-Assad is not responsible for the creation of ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. America is.
The Islamic State will not fade away soon. It just used the chaos of the assault on Aleppo to retake the historic city of Palmyra. But the Islamic State is a symptom, not the disease: Nine out of 10 deaths have been delivered by Mr. al-Assad’s state forces. The Islamic State appeared when he lost legitimacy, and will not disappear until he loses power.
"Nine out of ten deaths have been delivered by Mr. al-Assad's state forces."
They have? Not if you consult the Wikipedia entry for Casualties of the Syrian civil war. The article cites various sources including some that are prominently anti-Assad to come up with estimates of approximately 100,000 government combatant casualties and a similar number of opposition combatant casualties. That takes care of about half the casualties right there. The idea that 90% of the casualties have been innocent civilians targeted by Assad is rubbish.
2. Puppet states are back. Post-Aleppo Syria is a manufactured product of Russian and Iranian military and economic aid, period. Not since the Cold War has a satellite state combined a total lack of public legitimacy with total repression of its people in such a horrendous way. Let us not allow this to become a model.
Mr. al-Assad has a "total lack of public legitimacy?" That's not the opinion of Jonathan Steele in this story at the Guardian titled "Most Syrians back President Assad, but you'd never know from western media."  Nor is Saunder's claim supported by this story at Foreign Policy titled "Assad's Sunni foot soldiers" from 2015. Or this story from The National Interest from earlier this year. These are mainstream sources that Mr. Saunders must be very well acquainted with in his capacity as the Globe's number one foreign affairs commentator. The "total lack of public legitimacy" chestnut is a total fabrication.

3. The refugee camps will become permanent cities. Turkey’s Gaziantep and Sanliurfa camps and the surrounding cities each contain around 300,000 Arabs and Kurds (of 2.5 million now living in Turkey) who have fled Mr. al-Assad’s vengeance. Jordan’s Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps contain more than 140,000 people. As long as the Assad regime remains in control, they cannot return; nor can the much smaller numbers of refugees who have fled to Europe and North America. It is time to start acknowledging these new cities, and populations, as long-term realities that could exist for a decade.
A decade? The Palestinian refugee cities scattered about the Middle East have been around for well over half a century. The reverberations from our failed regime change policy with respect to Assad can be expected to last at least as long. Had Turkey and Jordan not connived with the US "regime change" agenda from the beginning, they wouldn't be facing this refugee burden today.
4. The Libyan option was preferable. The decision by the United States (and Canada) to avoid a full-scale military intervention in Syria in 2012 and 2013 was based largely on recent precedent: The long-term invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan were catastrophic failures, leaving little appetite for another. But why, after the gas-attack nightmare of 2013 crossed every red line, didn’t we lend our military strength to unseat Mr. al-Assad? The answer, by then, was Libya: The same thing was done there in 2011, when NATO forces lent air support to the popular move to overthrow their own dictator – and now look at the place. A disaster.
But that’s the less horrific option. Libya is an unstable mess verging on a civil war of its own. But it is not the site of the sort of enormous-scale monstrosities, involving hundreds of thousands of deaths, that it would have become if Moammar Gadhafi had been kept in power and permitted to mete his revenge.
We also have to remember, when contemplating U.S. President Barack Obama’s fateful failure to take action (and Justin Trudeau’s promise not to get involved), that the best possible outcome “getting tough” could have produced would have been something resembling current-day Libya. He would be under attack by media and Republicans for provoking this outcome, and Western militaries would be caught in an impossible position. But hundreds of thousands would likely still be alive.
Just wrecking Syria the way we did Libya would be preferable? Libyans enjoyed the highest standard of living in all of Africa under the "despot" Gadhafi. What are they enjoying today? The disgusting arrogance on display here is utterly despicable. How is it our business to decide what's right for Libya or what's right for Syria?

Sarkozy's political resurrection dead on arrival

Poor Sarko! Maybe now he's run out of gambits to avoid facing up to those pesky allegations of Gaddafi connections that refuse to go away. At least we can hope!

As for the prospects of the French centre-right coming back after the ruinous reign of Hollande the Conqueror, don't hold your breath. Big Media claim that Juppe or Fillon can stave off Le Pen in the next election, but the think tank here at Falling Downs has another angle.

Hollande is a "socialist" in the same vein as Hillary Clinton is a "progressive." That is to say, not really. But the electorate in France has viable options that the US electorate never did when they elected Trump; genuine socialist presidential candidates well to the left of Hollande's pretend socialists.

We shall see.

Speaking of Gaddafi, that paragon of journalistic virtue, The Guardian, has an interesting story about Libya on view at their website today. Lots of juicy tidbits there, like the fact that the cumulative decline in Libya's GDP since we liberated them from their evil dictator has passed $200 billions. That's a lot of green for a nation of five million people to lose!

I found the article interesting in light of the "fake news" contrived controversy that's been swirling about recently. That's where, from what I understand, we the news consuming public must jettison our taste for alternative news sources and rely instead on the steady and reliable Big Media news outlets.

Like The Guardian.

I scoured that Guardian story end to end for some acknowledgement that it was in fact Sarkozy, Blair, and Obama who destroyed the most prosperous nation in Africa.

Nothing!

I did learn, though, that Libya is  "...the country the worst-hit by the political upheaval of the Arab Spring."

You see, it wasn't eight months of relentless bombing by the Nations of Virtue that destroyed Libya. It was the political upheaval of Arab Spring.

Thank God for responsible Mainstream Media!

Five years after we liberated Libya, we're liberating them again!

Yup, more US bombs to liberate the people of Libya!

I have a hunch we're gonna keep liberating those benighted folks as long as they've got a single drop of oil in the ground.

Note that we're specifically liberating Sirte, supposedly an ISIS stronghold. But, check out the last few lines of this story from Al Jazeera from a few days ago. Sirte was already liberated!

I have another hunch that the story behind the story is that things aren't going according to script for America's bumboy du jour, General Haftar. It's now come out that at least four of the Nations of Virtue, US, UK, France, and Italy, all have boots on the ground in support of the good General.

You will recall that General Haftar cut short a cosy twenty-year retirement in Virginia to return to his homeland and fight for... the people? ...the oil? ...the USA?

Nobody knows... but it's clear that when General Haftar calls in missile strikes, the USAF answers the call.

How to shut down the Towelheads 'o Terror

It was more than a little discomforting to hear Mr. Hollande, he of the spurs etc, not to mention the really expensive haircuts, promise to avenge the Nice travesty by ramping up the bombing of Iraq and Syria.

Apparently there's a lot of folks in our leadership circles here in the Nations of Virtue who fail to connect cause and effect.

As vile as the Nice attack was, you have to admit that a terror attack in Libya or Iraq or Afghanistan that killed a hundred people would not so much as raise an eyebrow here in the Nations of Virtue.

That's because white lives matter so much more, regardless of how much brown or even black lives matter.

So here's a thought; perhaps, if we in the virtuous West are serious about combating "terror," we begin by stopping our terrorising the Islamic nations.

All of them.

Now.

Dropping names, dropping bombs, and why Obama needs to put US boots on Syrian soil

That indefatigable cheerleader for war, Bernard-Henri Levy, solemnly informed us this week that, make no mistake, we are at war with Islamic State.

"A new kind of war," no less.

And please note that this is not a war of our choosing; this war has been forced on the US and France and their allies. Yes, the sordid history of France in Algeria and America's serial wars on Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria have nothing to do with the emergence of radical Islam.

They hate us for our democratic values, our openness, our tolerance...

Even the great BHL seems to be vaguely aware of what a putrid pile of shit he has concocted here. Perhaps that is why he has perfumed this outrageously dishonest dung-heap of a call to war with no less than twenty instances of name-dropping:

 Leon Blum

 Elie Halevy

 Georges Bataille

 Michel Leiris

 Roger Caillois

 Thucydides

 Clausewitz

 Carl Schmitt

 Saint Augustine

 Saint Thomas Aquinas

 Victor Hugo

 Paul Claudel

 Hitler

 Massoud

 Izetbegovic

 Mujibur Rahman

 Tariq Ramadan

 Abdelwahab Meddeb

 Churchill

 George Pitt-Rivers.

Wow! That's a staggeringly impressive level of erudition on display in one relatively brief essay! How is it possible that such a brilliant narrator could be lying to us?

And fear not, BHL already has a road-map to victory in the war that the forces of darkness have forced on the Nations of Virtue.

Yes, they've got us cornered, those "fascislamists" do, and we freedom-loving peaceable nations who have been ravaging and plundering and humiliating the Islamic world for generations have no choice but to fight a merciless war for our very survival...

And the very survival of Western Civilization depends on Mr. Obama putting American boots on the ground.

Now!

...at least according to that philosopher, war-monger, and imbecile-at-large, the esteemed Bernard-Henri Levy.

Four years after NATO destroyed Libya, the ensuing humanitarian tragedy remains Gaddafi's fault

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the murder of former Libyan leader Muamar Gaddafi, facilitated by the core NATO nations plus a gaggle of opportunists and me-too states, and spearheaded by France.

Eccentricities aside, the Libyan people made great strides on virtually every quality of life indicator while the mad dog was at the helm. After "liberation," Libya is a failed state.

France is marking the occasion by lamenting Libya's failed state status in this story at the state-owned news purveyor, France 24; Four years on, Gaddafi's legacy plagues chaotic Libya.

Definitely informative. We learn that "Libya is the biggest slice of Terra Nullius in the world."

We learn that Gaddafi was "quixotic."

Not only that, he was also a "mad dog."

Yup, all of Libya's problems today are due to Gaddafi!

Nowhere in the story is the NATO intervention so much as mentioned in passing! An eight month military intervention by the most powerful war machine on earth, an intervention that totally destroyed Libya, had nothing to do with destroying Libya!

Having successfully brought freedom and democracy to Libya and Syria, France's Philosopher King casts his eye on Greece

I have no idea why, but today Canada's national newspaper of record gave an entire half page over to the international bon vivant and moron-at-large BHL.

The legend-in-his-own-mind BHL has it in for Tsipras and his referendum. Apparently holding a referendum on a matter that is life and death for the future of your country is anti-democratic.

Not only that, but it was an insult to 18 European countries, some of whom rolled over and cried "uncle" when they felt Frau Merkel's jackboot on their necks.

That's why Greece should roll over too...

That's pretty much the extent of the philosophical reasoning you're going to find here.

What I learned today from Canada's national newspaper of record

We're at $4.75 for the Saturday Globe and Mail at Chow Dong's variety store in Wiarton.

Just so you know... I obviously take the news seriously.

What did I learn today?

Well, I read the whole thing cover to cover, and what I learned is that Islam is seriously messed up.

Yup, there's something wrong with that religion.

Right there on page F3 Elizabeth Renzetti has an interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali. That's the Somalian woman who has carved out a great career in the West by slamming Islam.

Normally I have a certain amount of respect for Ms. Renzetti. She's generally more on top of things than her idiot partner, who also happens to write for the same national newspaper of record.

Ya, I know...

But I think she dropped the ball with today's story.

Hirsi Ali, like Canada's own Irshad Manji, has an axe to grind and books to sell. The "Islam is intrinsically evil" trope is a big hit in the West. Both Ali and Manji have been flogging it to death, pun intended.

Not that there's anything punny about flogging anything to death....

But back to Renzetti's interview with our prized Islamic rebel Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is apparently Islam's iteration of Martin Luther.

No shit!

So she gotta be great!

Hmm... all I see in that interview is how there is something inherently "wrong" with Islam...

There's gotta be... after all, how else to account for all that extremist Islamic terror?

Well, you could start by addressing France's war on Algeria...

Israel's relentless ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem...

America's (and the me-too ass-kisser states) wars on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria...

There's something fundamentally amiss in Islam?

The biggest problem with Islam is that the Nations of Virtue have been bombing them to ratshit for the last fifty years.

Unless of course they are totalitarian puppet states who agree to spend their oil booty on lots and lots of bombs and guns manufactured by their betters in the Nations of Virtue.

No wonder the Muslims are pissed off!

Libya's new NATO-trained army looking for a few good men.

Unfortunately, when authorities realized they were looking for them in public parks in the vicinity of Cambridgeshire, the training program was quickly kiboshed.

Alas, it was too late for the "alleged victim" in our tale, who spent an impressive 38 minutes having his poop chute violated by our Libyan allies. One suspects the perpetrators may have had access to some of Gaddafi's vast Viagra stores that went missing after the great victory of 2011.

No word on if and when NATO training of the new Libyan military will resume.

About Canada's "expanded role into Syria"

The think tank here at Falling Downs wants to go on the record:

No!

No expanded role into Syria.

Nor should we have had any role whatsoever in Iraq.

And Afghanistan was a mistake from the moment General Hillier promised to take out the murdering scumbags.

The General Command types were bursting with pride over our glorious contribution to the NATO war on Libya.

How has that turned out for the Libyan people?

Expanded role in Syria?

No.

No role in Syria. We can't roll back the mistakes we already made, but we can stop making the same mistakes again and again...

Freedom of speech long fucked in France

Ask Dieudonne M'bala M'bala about "free speech" in France.

The spectacle of 40 plus foreign leaders jockeying for photo-ops in Paris today was truly wretch-worthy.

I'm listening to the Rex Murphy show on CBC, and today's topic is the past week in Paris. We're getting late into the show, but thus far the only caller who tried to connect the dots between Paris this week to our drones, our bombing of this Muslim nation and that, our ravaging of Iraq and Libya and Afghanistan, was cut off early.

Obviously, at the CBC, "Islamic terror" is a spontaneous eruption of irrational hate, aimed at the West generally and at Jews specifically, for no reason whatsoever, other than that the crazy Islamic religion just makes towel-heads crazy with hate!

A few topics not in any way approached on Murphy's show; the history of colonialism, Algeria, Palestine, America's serial wars on Muslim countries, that lovely photo collection from Abu Ghraib...

The Rex Murphy show today is a great showcase of Western ignorance and denial. The only caller who suggested a causal link between "terror" and what we do to "them" was cut off.

If we can't get beyond our ignorance and denial, we're headed for lots more of what we saw this week.

NATO's weakest link will be the first domino to fall

It's definitely NOT coming up roses for the wily Erdogan these days.

Erdogan is being pushed into a corner by his NATO overlords. He has spent three years building up ISIS at their behest, and now that it's become more than obvious that ISIS has (supposedly) slipped its leash, he's being fingered by Biden as the shady dealer who has facilitated the rise of the Islamic State.

No wonder he's pissed!

Tonight, as the Turk army watches from across the border, NATO's Frankenstein is taking the city of Kobani in Syria, and ethnic Kurds are rioting in at least 30 major cities in Turkey.

The Erdogan regime almost collapsed not too long ago over plans to build a shopping mall.

Now it's caught between ISIS and NATO.

Realistically speaking, the Erdogan regime is a partner of both.

The Beltway nabobs are ready with an Erdogan replacement; Fethulla Gulen has been biding his time there in Pennsylvania, waiting for his turn in the spotlight.

Unfortunately for the masters of the universe, it is unlikely that their bumboy of choice could conjure up more than token support on the ground in Turkey.

Which means that going forward, Turkey is destined to become one of the ruined states like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria, that have been deliberately destroyed by American meddling.

This scenario isn't going anywhere good.

Canadian commander of NATO war on Libya now chief of Lockheed Martin Canada

Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard got his hero medal and then scurried off to the private sector, where he is today ensconced as the commander of the Canadian branch of Lockheed Martin.

His most important... no, his only duty, is to make sure Canada signs on for the F-35. Great thinking on the part of Lockheed Martin; who can say "no" to a war hero?

Bouchard has some insights into the War on Libya.

He's disappointed in the lack of progress.

Well, Libya may be going up in flames, but at least Mr. Bouchard has done OK for himself.

Libya continues to enjoy blessings of "Operation Unified Protector"

As you may recall, that was the code name for the eight month long NATO bombing campaign against the infrastructure and government of Libya.

The Nations of Virtue don't actually win many military encounters with those pesky terrorists who insist on resisting their good intentions. That's a fact. But, goddam, do they ever deserve a prize for coming up with bullshit names for their military operations.

Operation Pillar of Bullshit.

Operation Over the Edge.

Operation Valiant Guardian...

But back to Operation Unified Protector.

Canadians were particularly pleased with this operation, because it's simply not every day that they get to drop bombs on a country with no air force or air defenses. Their pride stems in part from the fact that a Canadian was in charge of the NATO air war.

In fact, Ottawa was so chuffed they even minted a new military medal to honour our heroes.

So how are things faring out for the Libyans since we liberated them from their leader...

Not that well, as it turns out. Three years after we dispatched the Monster of the Maghreb to his reward, Libya is disintegrating into complete chaos. Even the virtuous NATO liberators are shutting down their embassies and fleeing the scene of their crime.

Hell, even that sweet Libyan crude we fought so hard to liberate is slipping from our grasp...

Somebody needs to be held to account...

GADDAFI!!!...

Yes, it's all Gaddafi's fault!

Pot-addled blogger predicts Gaza missile crisis AND Libya meltdown three years ago

Told ya so.

OK, so I was wrong about Gaddafi getting to Gaza to play chess...

But plenty of other stuff apparently made it to Gaza.

As for Libya, NATO, aka "the Nations of Virtue," have long since washed their hands of the failed state that they rendered a failed state.

Before NATO's glorious victory over Gaddafi, Libya was the most prosperous country on the African continent by a wide margin.

Gaddafi's subjects enjoyed free or subsidized housing, education, health care, foreign travel... but none of that was good enough in the eyes of the Nations of Virtue.

Because the Monster of the Maghreb was promoting pan-African unity and acting like a pied piper wanting to lead all those black folks out of the US sphere of influence.

No way was Uncle Sam gonna sit still for that...

BBC finally finds some good news about Libya

The BBC was amongst the foremost war cheerleaders during NATO's nine month bombing campaign in the country last year. In the chaos that has ensued since the NATO "victory" the BBC has been all but silent.

That changed today.

The lead on BBC's newscasts all day long was the arrest of former Gadaffi side-kick Abdullah al-Sennusi in Mauritainia.

Big news, this.

Maybe now the Libyan people will find closure, according to the Beeb.

Closure is one of those Western concepts lifted out of new-agey psycho-babble that means absolutely nothing outside the world of middle-class Westerners. Any Libyans who might find "closure" with the arrest of al-Sennusi already live in London anyway.

Then of course there was the requisite hand-wringing over where al-Sennusi might see a trial. The BBC provided a steady stream of talking heads speaking for the imaginary interum government of Libya who claimed that Libya was fully capable of providing a fair trial.

Libya isn't capable of ensuring that drivers stop at red lights. Libya can't even maintain those lights. The only thing functional in the new Libya is the oil sector.

If the BBC were interested in doing a news story about Libya and their favorite war they might want want to delve into the reasons for that.

In the meantime, at least they've got al-Sennusi.

Libyan war heroes desecrate graves of British war heroes

Our nasty NATO rebels are at it again.

You remember our brave freedon fighters, don't you? Relaxing on mattresses and smoking hashish while waiting for British warplanes to bomb the Gadaffi forces into oblivion. Since their bold NATO-led victory the rebels have run riot throughout the country.

They've left no stone unturned in rooting out former Gadaffi loyalists. Torture and summary execution are the tools of choice for dealing with the loyalists. And how do they know who was a Gadaffi loyalist?

Apparently one of the tell-tale signs is a black skin. The NATO rebels' reign of terror has masked an anti-black genocide that none of their NATO patrons, let alone their liberal apologists hiding behind the heinous "R2P" doctrine, seem to notice or comment on.

Now our rebels, perhaps running out of living victims, have turned their wrath on the WWII military cemetary in Benghazi. Video footage shows them on a headstone-smashing spree, exacting vengeance on the graves of their one-time liberators.

That's gratitude!

Anarchy as an instrument of foreign policy

I'm not talking about the "black bloc" wankers who wreck every otherwise legitimate demo here in the "West".

We all know those supposed anarchists tend to be 3/4 undercover cops and 1/4 misguided teenagers.

I'm talking about real-world anarchy like the US invasion created in Iraq and the NATO intervention created in Libya.

The anarchy that we created there prevents the machinery of civilization from functioning effectively. Everything from tax collection to garbage collection to routine policing goes down the toilet because the rule of law is no more.

Who benefits from this?

Well, we do. You'll notice that the only locii of law and order in either Iraq or Libya are the oil fields.

As long as there is law and order in the oil extraction industry we don't care what happens in the rest of the country.

Besides; keeping civil society and the state apparatus disorganized and weak prevents them from developing nuclear weapon programs.
