I was pleased to see a little bit of a Social Dem caucus forming around Bernie after the mid-terms. If the Democratic Party is to gain any traction going forward, it'll only happen once the old guard shuffles into the sunset. Until then, there's no particular reason for anyone of a progressive bent to vote Dem.
Six months in, I'm underwhelmed. Instead of keeping the focus on their progressive ideas, they've been reduced to mud-wrestling Trump in the quagmire of identity politics. Sorry, but being offended by Trump's race-baiting hyperbole isn't going to be much of a vote getter in 2020. They're quickly making themselves irrelevant.
In this they have the full connivance of America's mainstream media, the proprietors of which are more than happy to sideline anyone espousing real health care reform and serious taxes on unearned wealth. And indeed, they much prefer endless coverage of outrages, real and imagined, to reasoned discussion of critical issues.
If the Social Dem Caucus is to make good on it's potential, they need to get over their hurt feelings and shift the focus back to electoral politics and actual issues. Trump's tweets need not be an issue, if you don't make them one.
Otherwise, they're just helping ensure a Trump victory in 2020.

Ramping up the dumbing-down in Retardation Nation
I've long suspected that the editing function at Canada's newspaper of record has become the province of their unpaid interns. Now I'm wondering what high schools they're recruiting those interns from.
Take this caption from a photo on the back page of the sports section; "Seene last year in her home in White Rock, B.C., Olympic weightlifter Christine Girard wear her bronze medal..."
Really? Two flubs in one sentence?
Or, how about informing the reader, in a story about the DNC lawsuit against Russia, Wikileaks, and the 2016 Trump campaign, that Trump is a Republican? I would think that anybody picking up a Globe and Mail already knew that.
That story in itself promises to be an entertaining footnote in the Big Book 'o Bullshit & Bamboozlement documenting the last fifty years of America's descent into self-parody. Nuclear-armed self-parody with a Manhattan condo hustler in the White House making America great again. What could be funnier than that?
After a year and a half of various investigations into the matter have turned up nothing but speculation and innuendo, the same DNC brain trust that originally promoted Trump's candidacy and stabbed Bernie in the back figures they'll get to the bottom of things with a lawsuit?
Really?
Elsewhere, guest self-promoter Rick Lash has some tips on unleashing your inner genius. Although it's probably a little late for me, I'm a sucker for this self-helpy shit. It's nice to think that with a little tweaking I coulda been another da Vinci or Elon Musk.
While Lash doesn't mention it, Musk's true genius has been in convincing investors that Tesla has the same market value as Ford.
Ford builds more cars every month than Tesla has built in its history. Ford turns a profit and pays dividends.
Tesla burns through borrowed money like a East Hastings drunk goes through Listerine. Clearly, the only thing propping up Tesla's share price is a mass contagion of wishful thinking, but for now at least, the companies have equal value.
That's genius alright!
Retardation Nation indeed.

Happy Easter!
Sorry Mom, I didn't make it to church this year. Didn't make it to synagogue for Passover either, if that's any consolation. My God-fearing agnosticism is multi-confessional.
I did however find time to go out to the garage and tinker with the Ninja. She's purring like a kitten and waiting for her spring ride, just as soon as the weather clears up a little.
The big news this Easter weekend was the Tax March. That's the latest spasm of the anti-Trump movement, die-hard Hillary fans who have yet to concede last November's election.
Come on folks - even Fareed Zakaria acknowledges that those 59 Tomahawks have rendered Donny J Presidential!
Yup, he's got blood on his hands. That's what America looks for in a leader.
What caught my eye in the news coverage of the Tax March was the logos of Dem Party astro-turf outfits all over the place.

If you think that tax march was some kind of grass roots thing that just happened, think again. Go to taxmarch.org and check out their partners page. Holy cow, that page could keep a Soros-is-the-antiChrist conspiracy theorist busy for months!
What baffles me is that all these groups are invariably described as "leftist," yet they've all been co-opted by the Democratic Party. I'm a long-term observer of US politics, and I'd have to say I didn't notice much of a leftward tilt under eight years of Obama... nor under eight years of Clinton, for that matter.
Mind you, I'm a long-time small "c" commie and what I understand by the word "leftist" may mean something else. I suppose you could be relatively leftist as long as you only compare yourself to those to the right of you on the political spectrum, but has there been anything to the right of the Democratic Party in the last twenty years? At a minimum the label should imply the prioritisation of the interests of working people over the interests of capital.
Maybe this watering down of labels and their meanings is all part of the long term bamboozlement of the working class in America. Kind of like how "red states" means Republican states. In the rest of the world the colour red is unambiguously associated with the political left. Only in America has that been successfully turned upside down.
With the Ninja shaking off the winter hibernation the only vehicle in the fleet still giving trouble is the little Ford 4x4. A friend was telling me the other day that could be stale gasoline. After all, it's been parked in a snow-drift all winter.
Possibly, but the Mustang 50 was parked one snow-drift over and took only a half hour on the battery charger to come alive. The Ninja wasn't fired up once all last year, so the gas in the tank is two years old and I've got it running.
Can't be stale gas.
I think that almost universal ignorance of what is "left" is what allowed Donny J to waltz away with Hillary's election. That MAGA schtick worked wonders for a class of marginalized Americans who wanted so desperately to believe that the ersatz billionaire was going to set things right for them. Little did they realize...
But here's the good news. Trump tapped into massive voter disaffection with the political establishment. So did Bernie. Both men eventually sold their supporters down the river. Those people are still there, and there's no reason to think most of them, both the Sander's supporters and people who voted for Trump, are going to be anything other than pissed off when the 2020 White House contest gets serious.
With the right candidate, maybe then Americans will get the change they can believe in.
I picked up that Ninja for cheap just a few weeks before my 60th birthday. I was in denial. That old chestnut about how inside every sixty year old there's a sixteen year old wondering what the fuck happened is truer than true.
So I bought a motorcycle. Next sunny day I'll take her for a blast around the block, which happens to be a ten mile loop with a lot of long straightaways. Spring ain't truly sprung till you get that first rush of 90mph wind through what's left of your hair...

What's left?
Back in the day, it was a pretty straight-forward thing distinguishing right from left on the political spectrum. The right was where you found your reactionaries and warmongers. The left was the "progressive" side of the spectrum. The left was pro-labour, pro-women's rights, pro-choice, anti-racist, anti-war, and if not out and out anti-capitalist, at least acknowledged that the titans of industry and the big banks needed to be kept on a short regulatory leash.
Those were the days when the top union boss at the UE, which represented the workers at the General Electric plant where I cut my welding teeth, was an out-and-out self-confessed commie. Not a "liberal," not a "social democrat," not even a "socialist," but a full-bore communist. Yup, that was CS Jackson. And, may I add, he was a mightily effective union leader to boot.
Today, distinguishing left from right is a much more nebulous undertaking. As I tour the blogosphere, I encounter a gusher of references to "rabid leftists," "left-wing extremists," and "die-hard socialists." At first blush one is inclined to be impressed at the robust health of the left in American politics today!
Then you realize that all these references are to the Democratic party and its acolytes...
Bummer, man!
Sad to say, the Democratic party today is at least as reactionary and warmongering as their Republican counterparts, if not more so. And at least as pro-capitalist. Hillary Clinton, the "left" candidate, just spent 1.2 billion dollars, provided mainly by the big banks and the war profiteers, in the most expensive election campaign in US history, only to be defeated by a reality TV personality who spent a small fraction of that and got virtually nothing from the big banks and the warmongers.
What the fuck goes on here?
Back in the day, we could rely on the media to explain things, and if we didn't like the explanations provided by so-called mainstream media, there existed a thriving alternative media happy to fill in the blanks. Today the mainstream media is totally in the pocket of the "deep state" and the alternative media hysterically informs us that Obama has a communist agenda.
CS Jackson must be spinning in his grave...
But at least what's left of the UE had the good sense to endorse the Sanders campaign.
Alas, we know how that ended.
What's left?
Not much... but there is hope! Bernie's short-lived run as a socialist proved that there's a hunger in America for real change. Bernie's unfortunate capitulation to the corrupt Dem party machine put an end to that.
But the hunger remains.

Dateline Canada: Is Trudeaumania on the wane?
Justin has had a year now to do something.
I mean do something other than swanning about on the world stage sniffing out photo-ops.
Electoral reform? Not so fast... we need to study it a little more...
Legalizing marijuana? Hey, we need more time to study that too...
Oh bullshit!
Lot's of countries have done it, plenty of US states too. It can't be rocket science. My hunch is they'll keep studying it till they're satisfied that their friends on Bay Street are going to be the big winners. Ya, it'll happen eventually, but welcome to corporate cannabis.
Big bud.
But there are signs that Justin's bottomless well of charisma isn't charming the rubes the way it used to. Check out this story at CBC about Justin's reception at the Young Workers Summit on the weekend.
Shouting and jeering?... forsooth!
Good on those millennials for asking real questions and demanding real answers instead of settling for a selfie with the golden boy.
The think tank here at Falling Downs figures we're seeing the emergence in Canada of the wave of disenchantment that has been sweeping the Western world, a disenchantment driven by working people who have had enough of the bullshit of their ruling elites.
It's another manifestation of the same rejection of business-as-usual that shocked the GOP aristocracy when an interloper pulled the Republican nomination out from under the stable of elite insiders who absolutely knew it belonged to one of them.
The same disgust with the establishment that, had it not been for a primary campaign utterly rigged by the Clinton machine, would have made Bernie Sanders the Democratic Party candidate.
People are choosing to say no to the status quo.
Good!

The closed loop of the military-industrial-media complex
That pre-DNC dump of hacked emails should have been a game changer. After all, those hacked emails removed all doubt about whether or not the Clinton camp resorted to skankery and slime to steal the nomination from Bernie Sanders.
Of course they did!
So what was the fallout in America's mainstream news sites? Did they say anything at all about the skankery and slime?
Nope. Instead, mainstream screens were overflowing with speculation about how Putin engineered the hack to help his good buddy Trump.
That story originated with Hillary campaign guru the Mookster, and by God, it was a stroke of genius! This little episode is gonna be a case study in Polysci classes for decades. Beautiful work, Mook!
You succeeded in taking the eyeballs of the electorate off your corrupt candidate, who the emails reveal as doing dirty by Bernie, and making the discussion about Trump's cosy and totally imaginary relationship with the evil dictator Putin!
Alas, there are some major challenges ahead for the ABCNBCCBS wankers who truly believe re-cycling press releases equals news reporting.
First of all, it looks like America's formerly reliable bum-boy Erdogan has gone completely off leash. As of right now, he's holding hostage a number of American nuclear weapons, variously reported as anywhere from 50 to 90.
He's also holding hostage hundreds of US troops who are supposedly guarding those nukes at a Turkish air base.
The Turkey situation right now is the biggest crisis of US foreign policy since the Cuban missile crisis. What is the media establishment telling you about it?
Nothing.
But they've got lots of theories about Putin's support for Trump.
Of course they did!

Wheels falling off Hillary campaign
Been watching the Dem convention for the last hour or so. Seems to me that there's a whole lot of denial in the air about the significance of the email scandal. What more proof do people need before they admit the system is rigged?
How delusional do you have to be to believe that the same establishment that rigged the system is, for the next couple of days of speechifying, embracing the "progressive values" that were so obviously absent throughout eight years of Obama?
Bernie motivated a lot of mostly young people with his anti-establishment rhetoric in the primaries. He motivated them by speaking out against a lot of stuff that the establishment candidate personifies: big banks, big money in politics, Wall Street, imperial over-reach, just to name a few.
Nope, there's not a lot of those young folks gonna be voting for Hillary.
I said it last February and I'll say it again; Trump will bury Hillary in November.

The pot-addled hillbilly reflects...
Taking my cue from those NYT stalwarts, Friedman and Cohen, I'd like to take a few moments to reflect. Thank you for permitting the indulgence.
Donald Trump. Not that long ago Mr. Trump was yukking it up with Reverend Al.

Now he's a "white supremacist?" Sure thing, Hillary!
Get outta here!
According to Thomas Friedman, Trump would have carpet-bombed the Islamic Middle East this week, because... well because Friedman knows he would have! Isn't that enough?
Islamic radicals. Yes, there are certainly Islamic radicals who hate America. But do they hate America for its freedoms? For the fact that America allows women to drive and queers to (mostly) thrive?
Or do they hate America because of what America has done in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Somalia?..
Trump, like Sanders, has tapped into the vast disenchantment that Americans harbour for their elites. The American people don't want more stupid wars for oil or Israel. They want jobs, housing, health care, and a viable future.
That's what the political establishment has manifestly failed to provide, which is why these political outliers have such appeal.

Progressives for Trump
The Farm Manager has been more than a little chagrined with this Trump thing. According to her, only an idiot or a delusional could root for Trump in this most fabulous race for the White House.
Not that she's for Hillary. No serious feminist could possibly be for Hillary.
In spite of what Madeleine Albright may think.
Hillary is the can-do candidate for the war machine. That's who "feminists" should be voting for?
I think not.
We're at a point in this campaign where it looks like Hillary is going to triumph over Bernie. I'm a little sad about that, because Bernie talked a lot of nice talk. Social democracy and all that shit.
So when Hill trumps Bernie, what's left for the so-called progressives?
Well, sorry to say, the only other candidate rattling the establishment cage other than Bern would be Donald Trump.
Now, Trump doesn't exactly talk a lot of social democracy. But if you look at his track record, he's got a pretty good set of bona fides marking him as a mainstream Manhattan liberal. Rich Manhattan liberals are famous for championing gay rights, abortion rights, Palestinian rights, civil rights of every stripe, left rights, etc and so on.
They are the quintessential liberals! Thats where Donald Trump comes from.
That's why every liberal in America should celebrate Mr. Trump's hijacking of the GOP!
And vote for Trump!
