Top twat pontificates on Venezuela's economic catastrophe

According to his Wikipedia page, Ricardo Hausmann is best known for inventing several abstruse concepts to make the Dismal Science even more obscurantist than it would otherwise be. When I was coming up "dark matter" was a term from theoretical physics and "original sin" was something you learned about in Sunday school.

No more. Thanks to Hausmann, introducing these concepts to economics has given dismal scientists some much-needed tools to better explain the inexplicable, or whatever it is those people do.

In his spare time, Hausmann is the director of Harvard's Center for International Development, the successor to Harvard's Institute for International Development, which went down in flames as a result of hanky-panky involving its activities in post-Soviet Russia. It was in his capacity as director at the CID that I found him in the Op-ed pages of my Globe and Mail today.

Here's a taste; "The Maduro government's all-out attack on liberty and democracy is deservedly attracting greater international attention." Hmm... gotta say that whenever I hear an apologist for Empire profess concern for "liberty and democracy" the old bullshit detector starts twitching uncontrollably. No honest person today would posit that being on Uncle Sam's bestie list has anything whatsoever to do with one's commitment to "liberty and democracy."

As for that "greater international attention" bit, I suppose that's all relative. There has certainly been no deficit of American attention to Venezuelan politics in recent decades. By their own admission, the National Endowment for Democracy (that US government funded "NGO"- how Orwellian is that!?) has spent over 100 millions since the election of Chavez meddling in Venezuela's internal politics, and it looks like their efforts are finally bearing fruit.

The claim that Venezuela is the world's most indebted country is a bit of a puzzler. According to the CIA, (ya, that CIA) Venezuela has a debt/GDP ratio of 36.7%. That compares to 181.6% for Greece, 132.5% for Italy, and 126.2% for Portugal... and oh lookee! There's the USA with a debt/GDP ratio of 73.8%!

But Venezuela is the most indebted country in the world? Get outta here!

So why doesn't Maduro just belly up to the loan desk at the IMF or the World Bank like all those other guys? Borrow a few billions to tide his country over this tight spot? That's an interesting question. Here's a couple of paragraphs from a Huffpost article a few years back.

Venezuela also has specific grievances against the IMF, which are likely to generate sympathy in other developing countries with democratic, left-of-center governments. On April 12, 2002, just hours after Venezuela’s democratically elected government was overthrown in a military coup, the IMF stated publicly that it was “ready to assist the new administration [of Pedro Carmona] in whatever manner they find suitable.”
This instantaneous show of financial support for a newly installed dictatorship - one which immediately dissolved the country’s constitution, general assembly, and Supreme Court - was unprecedented in the IMF’s history. Typically the IMF does not react so quickly, even to an elected government. It is no wonder that this move was seen in Venezuela and elsewhere as an attempt by the IMF to support the coup itself. Washington, which dominates the Fund, had advance knowledge of the coup, supported it, and funded some of its leaders - according to U.S. government documents.
Oopsie... it almost looks like Uncle Sam and his toadies at the IMF and the World Bank are a little inconsistent in their commitment to "liberty and democracy," doesn't it?
So there's no question that one of the main causes of Venezuela's suffering today is due to a long-standing policy of egregious Yanqui meddling.
A related and equally important cause can be found in Mr. Hausmann's text, "...the government decided to cut imports while remaining current on foreign-debt service..."
WTF? What kind of "socialist" is this Maduro? He prioritizes debt payments over feeding his people?
That's the Venezuelan tragedy in a nutshell; not enough socialism and way too much US meddling.

Some thoughts about Greece

The sky-is-falling crowd pretty much sees a Greek default as being the end of the world as we know it.

Bullshit!

I'm with the American Nobel laureates Krugman and Stiglitz; go ahead and pull the plug. Borrowing more from the EU just gets you in deeper.

Don Pittis and Laura Wright at CBC have postulated that Greece borrowed too much money and spent it stupidly. There is some truth to that.

Greece is one of only four NATO nations that spends two percent of GDP on defence, a charter requirement for members of the NATO gang.

If and when Russia or China offers a bailout package the NATO romance will be over anyway.

For far too long it has been a point of pride among the ruling class in Greece, the oligarchs if you will, to brazenly boast of the fact that they don't pay taxes. That's an attitude that filtered through to the middle classes and even the working class.

We're Greeks. We don't pay tax. Let's borrow a few billion more euros...

Not hard to see where that was going to end.

Another dead end was making tourism a pillar of the economy. The tourism industry is a mugs game, predicated on prostrating yourself before the drunken louts of the Continent looking for a cheap holiday. Mass tourism humiliated Greece long before the "troika" did.

Defaulting on the national debt will not be the end of the world. Greece is revered as the cradle of democratic norms of governance. Stepping away from the toxic trap of troika hegemony is the first step on the road to making Greece whole again.

"First World" already meddling in 2015 Ivory Coast election

The national newspaper of record (no, that is not ever going to be the National Post) today had a story for me penned by none other than former Canadian PM Joe Clark.

Follow Mandela's example in Ivory Coast.

Jolly Joe scored a trip to Ivory Coast courtesy of the National Democratic Institute. His mission is to check the temperature on the ground to see if those black folks are ready for democracy.

Throw Mandela's name at me and I'll read anything, at least for awhile.

I was doing OK till I happened upon this manure pile;

The NDI was invited by President Alassane Ouattara to send a neutral international panel to speak and listen to the leaders of parties, religious groups, civil society...

Excuse me?

The National Democratic Institute is a neutral international panel?

No, Joe, the NDI is 100% a creation of the US government! How far would your head have to be up your ass to call that "neutral?"

And by the way, Joe, Ouattara is an IMF bumboy installed at the pleasure of the USA, while the guy who should be president of the Cote d'Ivoire is languishing among the naughty niggers in the holding cells at ICC HQ in The Hague.

Have you noticed yet that the ICC can only find BLACK criminals?

The fact that two years out we get anti-Gbagbo propaganda delivered via mainstream media platforms tells you who has been anointed to win the next election.

That's democracy?

Text of IMF boss Christine Lagarde's love letter to Sarkozy

Dear Nicolas, very briefly and respectfully,

1) I am by your side to serve you and serve your plans for France.
2) I tried my best and might have failed occasionally. I implore your forgiveness.
3) I have no personal political ambitions and I have no desire to become a servile status
seeker, like many of the people around you whose loyalty is recent and short-lived.
4) Use me for as long as it suits you and suits your plans and casting call.
5) If you decide to use me, I need you as a guide and a supporter: without a guide, I may be
ineffective and without your support I may lack credibility.

With my great admiration,
Christine L.

Now that's what we call messed up around here. Use me, baby!

This is from supposedly one of the most powerful women in the world, a role model for young and not-so-young women everywhere who leads by example and demonstrates that they too can break through the glass ceiling.

Even more disappointing is who it is addressed to; an utterly vain, self-important dwarf with a Napoleon complex.

How does one attain the highest reaches of the IMF with such manifestly poor judgement? Lagarde turns back the clock on the status of women by fifty years.

Bwana still wields the whip in Africa

Seems more than a little untoward that we are once again seeing Africans being dragged off to Europe in chains to be judged before a tribunal of white men.

That was the spectacle at the International Criminal Court at The Hague today as judicial hearings began that will determine whether former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Gbagbo was removed from office and from Ivory Coast by French forces after a disputed election in 2010. That paved the way for France's and the West's pick for the Presidency, Alassane Ouattara, to take the reins. Ouattara is a former IMF functionary and knows how the game is to be played.

What would be gratifying is to see African commandos swoop down on Paris or London or Lisbon and spirit some of their former colonial masters back to Africa to account for their crimes.

Dr. Doom predicts more doom

We're doomed.

Thus spoke Nouriel Roubini in an interview with Canada's newspaper of record, which is not the National Post.

Roubini is famous as the guy who predicted the collapse of the US housing bubble. I predicted it too, but I guess it doesn't count when you're a retired welder in the back reaches of Bruce County.

But Roubini is a globe-trotting economist, so when he figured out that if you keep making loans to people who don't have a hope in hell of paying them back you'll eventually have a problem, people listened.

In today's interview with the Globe and Mail Roubini reveals that he is once again on the same page as the think tank here at Falling Downs. Has he been reading my blog? Fess up, Dr. Doom.

Roubini agrees that the Greeks will eventually have had enough of the IMF and will rise up and say "fuck you" to the austerity that their Euro-zone pals have imposed.

Goodbye euro. Welcome back drachma. And welcome back sovereignty. In the process maybe you can get rid of the Goldman Sachs flunky who you've got running your country.
