Here's a brief overview of the tortured path of denials and mea culpas from the highest levels of Britain's political class concerning their use of or complicity in torture.
The mea culpas came only after documents found in Libya after liberation put the lie to the denials that had been steadfastly offered on any questions of British impropriety with respect to torture.
Not only were the highest levels of the British political-security establishment revealed to have dirty hands, they were also exposed as serial liars.
None of which in any way disqualifies the Brits from claiming the moral high ground in judging the behavior of others, as Nepalese army colonel Kumar Lama has discovered.
And while the use of torture anywhere by anyone is morally indefensible, why should we not read headlines to the effect that UK courts are trying British citizens for the crime, not Nepalese?
