Reporting the news or promoting hysteria?

Our news business professionals have been doing a slip-shod job of reporting on this plague. It seems to me that they are far more interested in promoting hysteria.

For example, consider the obsession with case numbers. Due the vagaries of the testing protocols, "case numbers" as an indicator of the severity of the pandemic are virtually meaningless, but it's an impressive-looking number.

What matters is how many people are dying. The media have been whipping everyone into a frenzy about the skyrocketing case numbers in parts of the US recently. Have the death numbers been skyrocketing?

Check it out for yourself, but, with some localized exceptions, not from what I can see.  That would suggest that the virus is rapidly losing its potency, and therefore there is less cause for alarm, rather than more.

But you'd never know it from watching the news.
