Covid headlines completely divorced from data

Daily COVID-19 deaths in USA peaked between the first week in April and the first week in May. Since then, the daily "case" count has gone up approximately 250%, from the mid 20k range to over 60,000 per day. This makes for very scary headlines.

Meanwhile, the daily death count has plunged by almost two thirds, from well over 2k to under a thousand. (Data sourced here.) This fact has yet to appear in any headlines.

Obviously, the apocalyptic headlines we're seeing across the spectrum of news providers are driven by something other than facts.

Politics, perhaps?
