A New York based lobby group is petitioning the federal government to make crash helmets mandatory for everyone driving or riding in a vehicle.
Anwar Salim, spokesman for the Society To Prevent Death, claims that not enough is being done to preserve the lives of people in cars.
"Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of preventable death in America and indeed, the world," Salim told a news conference. "STPD research shows that up to 90% of motor vehicle deaths could be prevented if the victims had been wearing a full-face NASCAR type helmet."
STPD is borrowing a page from the anti-tobacco lobby's playbook by demanding that all new vehicles be sold with large warning signs on the fenders and graphic pictures of fatal car crashes on the hood and trunk. It is also in favor of speed limiting devices that will prevent new vehicles from 2015 forward going over 30 miles per hour.
Salim concluded the presser by unveiling the slogan for the holiday season fundraising campaign that STPD kicked off this week.
"Arrive alive, don't drive."
