Iran warships head to English Channel

The Royal Navy is sending its most advanced warship to the Persian Gulf, in a deployment intended to send a message to Iran following its threats to close the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, the HMS Daring, built at a cost of well over a billion pounds, will depart Portsmouth next Wednesday and has been equipped with new technology that will enable it to intercept any Iranian missile. However, it is unknown whether it will be able to intercept 200 incoming missiles at the same time.

Iran meanwhile has announced plans to send a flotilla of warships into the English Channel, the busiest shipping channel in the world.

Senior Iranian officials have made clear their determination to keep the Channel open.  500 ships pass through the English Channel daily.

“With the increasing instability in the region and the belligerent rhetoric of Sarkozy and Cameron, we thought it best to send a fleet to the area just to calm world markets”,  a senior Iranian Navy official said.
