Gay rights movement suffers setback in Russia

World champion figure-skater Evgeni Plushenko announced today that he is leaving behind his political career.

The former Olympic gold medalist was elected to the St. Petersburg Legislature in 2007. In the following years he attended a mere 11 of the next 123 sittings, to the chagrin of supporters and critics alike. Plushenko claims he became disillusioned because his party, Just Russia, didn't stand for anything.

Critics claim he didn't attend enough meetings to ever find out if the party stood for anything or not. Officials with Just Russia point out that the party has always been a voice for those who pine for the golden days of socialism, a blast from the past, as it were.

At a press conference party spokeswoman Olga Dimitov told reporters "we are disappointed that Evgeni has chosen to put his personal life before his homeland. While we wish him well in the new figure-skating school he is starting up, it will be interesting to see if he can attend more than ten percent of the time there."
